Well the dreaded happened to me, everytime I read one the cake disaters story I will shudder to think it would happen to me.
I was delivering a Arabian Nights theme sweet 15 cake when it happened. These cakes where made with the Wilton Pillow pans, 3 tiers and small 6" cake for the Jasmine princess. I had them in the back of the van and I was sitting in the back with them to make sure nothing would happen, it was raining cats & dogs, traffic was very slow and just when we where about three blocks away from the venue someone cut in front of my husband, he had to brake so hard the middle tier just slid and it slam against the wall before I could do anything, the cake cracked right in the middle. I though I could patch it up when we got there but it was beyond repair. I had to stacked the bottom tier with the small one on top and the middle which was to me the most beautiful! and take the splt cake to the kitchen. I called the mother to tell her what happened and also to tell her That I would refund her for the difference, she told me she was not concernced with money but what she wanted was to have a beautiful cake for her daughters party. I told her I felt awful, and that I also wanted her daughter to have a beautiful cake, that I this the best I could with the rest of the cake and that I would call her the next day to settled with her for the difference. I left the venue really upset and my husband try to make me fell better by telling me that this happens even to the best like "Buddy", but I was very upset, that cake was going to look beautiful once stacked.
About 3 hours later the mother calls me to tell me that the cake was beautiful, that she though the damage was really bad, but that she was pleasantly surprise with they way the cake look. She said that she could see where that middle tier would had made the whole cake beautiful but she was happy. I felt so relieved! and she insisted that she did not want any refund! can you believed this? The next day she calls me again to tell me that she got so many compliments for the cake, and the taste, the people where raving about how delicious it was and they wanted my business card (which I did not leave because I did not dare). She also told me that from now on I will be her cake lady! (this was the first time she ordered from me). I guess it wasnt that bad, but the experience was terrible!

First, sorry for your "disaster" but I guess it wasn't the worse and besides, now your first "disaster" is behind you ; ) I'm so glad your customer was kind to you and thought the cake was beautiful and delicious anyway. Things happen to the best! You demonstrated professional behavior and I'm sure that went along way with your customer. Good for you for making what could have been a bad situation into a better one!
So sorry this happened, but the rest of the cake was beautiful.
Sometimes in life it's not the disaster that happens but how we overcome it. Sounds like you toughed it out and did your best to see that the outcome was successful even though you were under a lot of stress. Good job on the cake, and on handling the disaster part. I am glad that the recipient handled it gracefully as well!
Besides that, even if we put lots of time and effort into decorating, it has always been my personal philosophy that it matters HOW the cake TASTED too... sounds like yours was wonderful if people were asking for your card! 
I'm sorry for your disaster, but that is such a beautiful cake, and you did a great job saving it 
I would have never guessed there was a missing layer!
That is just wonderful that she thought all was ok.....
That is the worst feeling, when we work SO hard and something happens in delivery.
