I have been asked to make a buckaroo themed cake for a little guy's first birthday. I have seen all kinds of carved cowboy hat cakes with fondant brims, however, I do not want to carve cake for this. I'd like to use a former of some sort and use a 50/50 GP/fondant mix to make the hat. It needs to be big enough to have presence on the top of a 3 tier cake (6 inch will be the top), so the little 2 or 3 inch CK candy molds I have seen aren't going to cut it. Any ideas where I could get something big enough?

I have a cake in my pics that has a cowboy hat topper on it. I made the hat from a fondant/gumpaste mixture. I bought some plastic cowboy hats off the web - check amazon or oriental trading company for "plastic cowboy hat decoration" to find something you like. I then put my gumpaste over the top of the hat and conformed it to the shape. For the brim, I turned another one of the plastic hats upside down and put the fondant over the brim part. When they dried, I removed the plastic hat part (they're pretty flimsy plastic, so you can remove the cap part by squishing the plastic) and glued the two gumpaste pieces together with water/gum glue. I think I might have put a waxed paper barrier between the gumpaste and plastic hat brim part to help them separate and not have the fondant want to dip into the hole part.

Hopefully that makes sense, and this is what you're looking for? icon_smile.gif

If it's a small one, I read where someone used a single pringle container to form the top of the hat. I haven't tried it yet, but I did buy some of those to be able to save one. icon_smile.gif Good luck.
