HELP with cupcake cake

I was asked to make a cupcake cake, which I have never done before.
It will be 60 cupcakes shaped into a rectangle decorated with a volleyball theme. That doesn't seem hard.

I have no idea how to charge for a cake made out of cupcakes. icon_confused.gif
It seems like a little more work to me than a sheet cake.

Is a cupcake considered the same as a slice of cake?
Can someone please give me advice on how to charge for this cake, and also they have to know asap!!

Any advice I need on how to do a cupcake cake would be greatly appreciated.

Price wise, figure out your time, the cost of ingredients and supplies. Are they asking you to supply the display? Will you have to rent the display or will they?

Figure all your costs to actually make these, deliver and set up plus your labour and hydro/water. Once you have that, you can split it into the servings and give yourself a pretty good idea of what your cost is, then after that decide what to charge per cupcake.

To me, depending on the detail required, flavour and decorations as well as display options cupcakes can go from $2.50-8.00 each.

I make cupcake cakes all the time...You won't be able to be a perfect rectangle because the cupcakes need to be staggered on the board in order to keep the icing from falling through the cracks.If you line up a few rows you will see what I mean...a 60 piece is quite large so your board will need to be as well.I personally would do 2-30's and then you can use a standard 19x14 board for each cake...having said that it is achievable for 60..I charge esssentially the same as a regular cupcake at $2.00 each because you aren't filling anything or smoothing sides etc so it is cheaper than a slab cake.so my 30 piece is $60.00.If they want fondant flowers/chocolate work etc it is more...I base one cupcake for one person so it is considered one serving...I would also charge a delivery fee as well.Check out my photos as I have many photos in there of cupcake cakes.HTH

Are you saying that a 60 cupcake cake would be to big to make? They only want one cake so I don't know what to say to them.
Do you charge more for cupcake cakes than sheet cakes? Thanks

A 60 cupcake cake will be fairly large as I can only get 30 cupcakes on a 19x13 board so you will need at least a 18x22 board or larger for 60.It can be done but you won't be able to fit it into any box or maybe the back hatch of a vehicle..You'll have to consider that!.I made a 120 pce cupcake cake once for a corporate event..The board was 4 ft x 3 ft...I charge less for cupcake cakes because essentially you are only icing the very top and not the middle (Like I do..I torte all my slabs) and there is no icing on the sides like a slab cake either so I price them a bit less.I basically charge $2.00 per cupcake for my cupcake cakes...$3.00 each for single cupcakes a per serving for slab cakes.HTH

Well, I guess I'm not making this cake, even after all the research I did and figured it all out.

I asked for $70.00 for the cake (60 cupcake pull apart cupcake cake) and they said the price was too high!! icon_eek.gif
That's less than $1.25 per cupcake.

Go figure............Hope they find one cheaper!!
