Sitting on the floor in my smoke filled kitchen

So.... It's 10:19 at night.

This week is my 30th birthday, and even though I'm 3 months pregnant, I wanted to make a large birthday cake for myself. Leveled and torted my tiers today. My 8" tier layers collapsed on themselves and so I decided to make another 8". However, this time I used fresh eggs, not powdered, and oil, not applesauce. (as I usually do) I filled it to where I usually do lately. =(

It's overflowed all over. But I'm desperate to save my cakes, so I opened all my windows and turned on the fans. I'm sitting here on the floor watching my cakes and hoping the fire alarm doesn't go off and wake my other children.

Happy Birthday to me....... LoL

Oh No!

Hang in there!

I had a birthday disaster like this too but about 10 yrs ago. I laugh at it now and it's a big joke around here!

Thank you. Most of the smoke has cleared, but I fear I will be making more cakes in the morning. I do see the humor in it all. I just wish I could help my dear husband see it as well. LoL.

I think I'll let them cool, head to bed and decide what to do with them in the morning. =)

My birthday is the day before my sons.I never really do anything for my birthday, so every year for his party I plan to make him a really great cake. As a present to him, but also as a present to myself. every year, his birthday cake falls on its face and ends in disaster. It seems to have become a tradition.. and people now know not to even attempt to ask about the cake .. or I will promptly bite their head off! haha.

I've done this more times than I care to admit. When I find my cake overflowing, in addition to opening windows/doors, turning on fans, I take a tea towel or paper towel, dampen it, then hang it over my smoke detectors. It keeps them from going off!

Also, I place the tin foil sheets (like you use to wrap baked potatoes) on the bottom of the oven, so if a cake does overflow, it is easy to take them out and place new ones down prior to the cake finishing, which helps reduce the burning/smoking factor.

Another thing I do now is collar my cake pans, especially my rounds. This has really helped with the overflowing factor. Mikel79 has posted a great tutorial on CC as well as Wilton.

And, since I'm baking at about a 4700 foot altitude, I can't fill my pans 2/3 full otherwise they raise too high and tend to overflow. So I go just barely over half.

I do feel your pain. I had to toss one of my cakes out because you could taste the smoke in the cake. And it took a week to get the smell out of my house because I insisted that I let the cake finish baking. Ugh, the lessons we learn!
