I'm making bamboo stalks for a baby shower cake. I've made them ahead of time and painted them with color paste and vodka. They have turned out very nice but I would like for them to keep the shine and not look dried out by the time I get them on the cake this Sat. Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep the shine (or get it back)?
You can use steam or edible varnish (recipe section on here). Both will make fondant shiny, HTH
I have used both methods with success; however, be careful with the varnish, you need to apply in in long single strokes, it tends to "ball or bubble up" if you try to brush it on as if it were paint. Also, steam larger areas FIRST and then varnish smaller areas...varnish + steam = disaster

I have a small clothing steamer that I bought at Bed, Bath and Beyond. I only use RO water in mine. I don't think that the RO water is necessary, it is just that I have an RO set up for my reef tanks.
I steam it very lightly. If you get one, make sure that it does not spit out big droplets of water.
