I am a hobby baker, and bake for friends and family ( hope to one day have my own business). And last week was my birthday. My 3 year old asked if I was going to make my own birthday cake and I said no, that I was too tired today. Well she decided to make me a cake, (with daddys help). My daughter decorated it with flowers my husband helped her cut out ( all while I was at work). When I got home, she ran to the fridge and pulled out the cake, and started singing "Happy Birthday" , at that moment, the cake slid to the floor. Tears immediatley filled her eyes and she ran to her room. I felt terrible for her! At that moment, I grabbed four forks, and told my daughter it was still perfect and my husband, my 9 month old , 3 year old and I sat on the floor and ate cake from my floor. (Freshly mopped by the way) It made my daughter feel much better! No use crying over spilled cake!

LOL.. people without kids will never understand that feeling of wanting to make it all better no matter what. In all honesty the floor isn't a totally gross place and you did good mom!! How sweet of her to make you a cake because you were too tired and a huge WTG for you and your family for making her feel better.

We were at a High School Football game a few years ago and watched a cheerleader carry a large sheet cake to where the other girls were waiting at the sides of the stands (out of site of most people except those of us on the end) She tripped and dropped the cake onto the dirt and grass.
The girls went after that cake on the ground like they hadn't eaten in a week. It was so funny to those of us who saw it. The cheerleaders did not realize anyone was watching them gobble up the cake!!

Let's face it - not ALL of the cake hit the floor - only part of it! The rest is fair game IMO! My kids are in their 20's and I guarantee I'd be on that cake today as fast as I would have if they were age 3. Actually faster - they both love to bake like me - and they're very good at it!

I don't have kids, but I know that I would do that for my nephew in a hot minute! Shoot, I'd do it for my mom if she went to the trouble and that happened!

Happy Birthday!

Sorry, but that is simply not true about all of us. We have no kids and that is by choice. Because we don't have kids does not mean that we don't have hearts. I worked for Pan Am and had some UMs (unaccompanied minors) on board. They were terrified. I would have done anything to make them feel better and I did the best that I could. Unfortunately, Pan Am did not train us for this sort of thing, but I think that I did fine. Anyway, at the end of the flight one man asked me how many kids I had. When I told him none, he did not believe me. He said that he thought that I must have had a "bunch" by the way I comforted the kids.

I highly applaud this mom for thinking so fast on her feet. I think that alot of people would have just seen the mess on the floor and not how it was affecting the child. The cake that she so lovingly made for her mommy was ruined and on the floor. She nust have been crushed and what mom did made that hurt go away probably immediately. She will probably remember this kindness for the rest of her life. HUGE, HUGE kudos go out to her. You are a super great mom in my eyes.

Oh, and cake on the floor? I bet that alot of our floors are cleaner than some of the counter tops in some/alot of restaurants.

BTW, great story and Happy Birthday.

That is SO cute! Awww....

One time as a teenager...a friend and I were making a big pot of spaghetti to feed a couple families as they were moving out. It was an apartment area...so we finished up the spaghetti and each took a handle and started to haul it outside to go to the next door apartment. Suddenly, we dropped it and spaghetti dumped all over! We had NO more food because their family was moving out too....(long story really...private apartments, not public)...so we looked over our shoulders and quickly scooped up the spaghetti that was on top (not touching the ground) and shoved it back into the pot. Then, we called my friend's dog over to eat the stuff that WAS touching the ground so nobody would know.

Obviously we would never do this again but we still laugh over it....

I baked a pound cake for a friend's Thanksgiving dinner. Before i left her driveway, she had dropped it on the kitchen floor. Her guests picked up hunks of cake and ate it before dinner. Most people are not disgusted by that type of thing and would hate it more for the cake to go to waste. That was an excellent thing to do to show your daughter how much you appreciated her gift.

I know that if that were me, I would have eaten off the floor too. I would be so moved to tears that she had done that for me I am not really sure where I would have drawn the line had it not dropped on the kitchen floor.

I know that there are lots of people that do not have kids that are very sensitive and love kids. I grew up in a small community and a couple in our church could not have kids and had wanted to. He came over to our house all the time and treated us kids to things(of course after asking our parents). He took us sledding, he would take us to get an popsicle in the summer time. we were the kids he treated because he could not have kids. He also knew that mom and dad did not always have the money or the time to do things for us even if they wanted too. There are also all kinds of reasons that people choose not to have kids also and some of those are very unselfish reasons.

KUDOS to all those who have ever been in her shoes too and have reacted the way she did. That is awesome. I have the 10 second rule in my home and it is a very slow count at times. there are no pets.

She'll probably remember this all her life. What a great mom you are!
I was probably 6 when I was trying to help my mom get supper ready, and was taking a salad to the table, and of course dropped the bowl . Our neighbor was over for dinner ,picked it off the floor , dried my tears and sat down and ate most of the bowl himself just to make me feel better!
Crazy things we remember!

Well of course you have no pets. With a 10 second rule, you'd never stand a chance of getting anything that fell if you did...... You'd have to change it to the fast 1/2 second rule.... lol

Thank you! I Actually did take a photo! I will try and get it on here. And by the way... I did not mean to imply that all people without children wouldn't do the same, I have a very dear friend who does not have children and would take a bullet for one of my children. I just said that was one reason that one of my friends didn't understand why I voluntarily ate cake off my floor. ha ha

haha thats such a sweet story icon_smile.gif it reminded me of the episode of Friends with the cheesecake. Where Chandler and Rachel split the cake and Rachel drops hers, and when Chandler laughs at her misfortune, she slaps the cake out of his hand. So they eat it off the floor. Of course, Joey walks up, looks at them, they look embarressed at being caught eating off the floor, but Joey whips out a fork, hunkers down and says "So what're we eating?" and starts tucking in haha!
