I've carved and frozen the layers of a 3d cake, it is going to be a fairy, a bit like a peppa pig 3d cake if that makes any sense to you lol.

I realised when carving that if I just put it all together and covered, when it came to cutting my friend would have to cut massive slices all the way down, so I have used altogether 6 layers of cake, I have filled them 2 at a time to make 3 sandwiches, then I am going to stack them with boards inside the cake so that when she cuts she can just go ahead and cut appropriately sized slices and then take the board out and move onto the next part. I realised though that that means some poor children (this is a 4 year olds birthday party) are going to get the middle parts of the cake with no fondant on, so could I put like a circle of fondant on top of each sandwich underneath the board before the next sandwich of cake, or would it go all sloppy and horrible stuck inside the cake with no air? I hope this makes sense.... if you have any idea please let me know asap so I can start stacking and fondanting icon_biggrin.gif

I wouldn't put any fondant inside the cake. Honestly, I think most kids peel off the fondant anyway, because it's way too sweet for many of them (especially 4 year olds, who aren't master candy eaters yet). As long as there is frosting and or filling with every piece, then I believe each child will get what they want and you don't have to worry about the integrity of your cake! Good luck icon_smile.gif

I don't know too many 4 year olds that care about fondant...and most of the time they don't eat the cake that's in front of them because of all the excitement of being at a party. If you just give them a piece of cake they should be fine and you can carve away!
Or, if you're that concerned, just dump a scoop of ice cream on top! thumbs_up.gif

As long as each kiddie gets sponge, jam and bc i'm sure they'll be happy! I recently did a doll cake, where the skirt is made of 3 layers of sponges with jam and bc so not fondant on every piece of cake - no one complained and everyone was happy with their cake! I wouldn't have even bothered with extra boards, it's easy enough to cut a large slice of torted cake into 2 or 3 pieces.
