My daughter and I are going to be making isomalt gems for the first time...

Would love any advice you have about this. Especially:

1) what is your preferred colouring method, what do you use
2) how long do the gems last in storage, and how do you store them
3) when do you attach them to a fondant covered cake
4) most importantly, if you are using clear gems any tips on making them look good and any tips on attaching them?

Thanks all!

I generally buy colored isomalt sticks, but apparently you can color it with regular food coloring. The gems will last indefinitely, but you have to keep them away from the humidity, which will cloud them. An airtight container with a moisture-absorbing packet of some kind is a good way to go. Attach them to your cake at the last minute, as well, because of the humidity problem.
