I'm making a fondant tree stump cake and I'd love any advice you can give me. I was going to cover the entire 7" x 4" high cake in a thin layer of brown fondant, then put a lighter brown circle on the top (and somehow make rings on it), then wrap the cake and roots in more brown fondant (sticking up a bit at the top). To make bark, I thought a crimper would work but really it's looking too neat, so I'm going to try just scratching the heck out of it with clay tools. Then I was thinking of making the roots out of RKT but now I'm wondering if they may pull away from the cake. Any ideas for moss?
Has anyone ever made one? Am I on the right track. Any suggestions would be so appreciated. Thanks!

I've done two tree stumps in two different ways. This one: http://cakecentral.com/gallery/2154222 I covered with a circle on top first and then a thin layer around the stump and then added "snakes" vertically and scored them as I went. You can build up the "snakes" and fold over the top to make it higher around the edge. Then I painted it with food color gels.
The second one: http://cakecentral.com/gallery/1253941 I just added chocolate fondant to the cake (after I put on the circle on top) and scored it. I used cake pieces for the roots at the bottom and extra thick fondant.

Kello: I tried to comment on both cakes when I went to look at them and they would not let me. I tried to save one to favorites and it wouldn't let me do that either. I don't know if it is a problem with my computer or their system, but just thought they were both so cute and I loved both of them. So since I could not tell you there I will tell you here.

another thing I did on wood grain (I've done a couple wine barrel cakes) is after you scrape up the brown fondant, paint with a mixture of brown food gel and vodka. that really takes it to the next level to make it look like wood.

I have made one(under my pictures) I wrapped darker brown around 3 10" layers and did a circle of lighter brown on the top. I took the darker fondant and twisted them around the outside of the cake and made scratches and grooves all in them and the tree stump. I then took black food coloring and lightly put on a paper towel and blotted and rubbed randomly all over the outside. Then i did the same with moss green. I then took gold luster dust and ivory luster dust and brushed on in random places. It gave it alot of depth.

I've done "Giving tree" stomp and it was fun ! Chocolate clay worked the best for the texture!
