I am planning a family reunion in June and I am trying to come up with a good idea for a cake. I have a large family so I know i'm gonna have to have a huge cake....but I'm also new at this so I don't want to do anything to complicated. I'm trying to impress...not embarrasse myself lol. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Ok...here's an idea....but depending on how ambitious you are, its up to you if you want to use it...
Take a large sheet cake and ice it green for grass. Then create a 3-D tree cake, make the leaves just one big bumpy things iced green, and ice the names on the tree OR get a small head shot of everyone that is in your family and have those printed into edible images, cut them out and place them on the tree. Anybody missing a picture will just have to have their name placed onto the cake instead. Place a post secured well to the cake board and place the tree over that onto the sheet cake so that it does not tip over....
Hope this gets the ball rolling!

The family tree cake is in the Wilton Course 1 book. If you would like, I can scan into my computer & email to you. Just let me know. Happy to help.

Or you might go in another direction and do cookies as favors. Knowing much more about cookies than I do cake, I make favors for everyone at our yearly family reunion. We're Italian, so I've done cookies in the shape of Italy and the Italian flag and written the family name across it. I then put the cookies in cello bags and tied it with printed ribbon that had the the family name, year, and location of the reunion on it.

I'm also doing a cake for my family reunion. I'm going to do the family tree wilton one or a family tree that you would find in a baby book. I'll probably go w/ the wilton one because the other has a lot of writing & not enough color. That's an idea. good luck

Picture and instructions are on their way to you. I included the pic of the cupcakes I remembered from Course 2 which would go great with the cake if you needed more servings. Have fun!

I was looking through some of my files, and I saw a pic of a wilton cake that I had saved to use as inspiration. It's a sheet cake iced green (for grass) and they made the people, kids, and animals all out of cookies, and then stuck it on the cake.
Here's the link for the pic: http://www.wilton.com/recipes/recipesandprojects/misc/picnicposse.cfm

I'm making a cake for a scrapbooking party that I'm going to set up like a scrapbook or family photo album. If you have pictures of different family members you can use edible images and make buttercream or fondant "frames" around them and then use fondant or buttercream to decorate the "scrapbook" page with family sayings, etc.
