Had a cake that was well planned out (or so I thought). I had to work overtime the night before it was due so I didn't get home until midnight. I was exhausted when I got up at 4 a.m. to finish the fondant work. While I was putting the cake away, I dropped the banana cake layer and so had to rebake and decided to work on fillings and mix the BC. I added PS to the BC (without sifting) and had to start the batch over. I had so much trouble with the fondant stars that when I was done, I realized that I had accidentally cut into the Wilton practice mat that I 've used for years

Then for some reason (loss of focus, brain fart, call it what you will) I put filling on the top layer. when I realized what I had done, I had to scrap it all off. My 3 layer ended up being 2 layer.... I have never had such a bad cake day! My 11 year old son told me "Mom, I heard you get mad at that cake 3 times! I've never heard you do that before!" 
By the time I got it to the party I was an hour late.
Wow...sorry for your bad day!! I think we have all them to some extreme at times. I hope the cake turned out and was a hit. Time for a good night's sleep!! 
Most of us have had those days, even thought about quitting, hate the stress, but then I see a design I would like to try, and I get inspired again. lol. It might be worth it if I made good money at it, but sometimes it just seems like a burden, alot of stress for a hobby. Oh well, I feel for you, I'm glad it turned out in the end, even if it was an hour late. 
Making a cake when sleep deprived makes things very difficult! I always make mistakes when I'm tired and find I have a very difficult time making decisions as well. I once stayed up an hour extra, just trying to make one stupid decision.

I feel your pain. I had a very rough time with a cake recently and am still "in recovery", LOL! The good news is, you will learn so much from this experience ... and will be even more ready for your next order. You can do it! Keep caking!
We all have bad cake days....put it behind you and learn from it. I think that's the most important part.

Really you never sift?? I'm amazed...I always do and always get hard pieces in the bottom of the sifter. I think its the humidity.
I sift sometimes, always get stuff at the bottom when I do, but NEVER have a problem when I don't sift either.
I know how you feel. Seems like more often than not I am up all hours of the night to finish a cake. I tend to do it on purpose though. I have 4 kids that I homeschool, so it is easier to start after they are in bed. I really hate when the client wants the cake the night before the event because I lose 12 hours of working time!!
