I just ran across this on the blog.. it appears Duff is now mass producing.. or lending his name to cake pops available at Sam's club... interesting...

I also saw where he now offers 8" "cake for two" for $250....ouch...
I knew they were expensive but these are not even really custom... you can choose from set patterns..

Wow! Talk about marketing genius. I doubt that his bakery actually makes them. But no wonder he is no longer doing his show "Ace of Cakes."

Unfortunately my son loves cake pops. I don't make them, he always twists one of our arms at Starbucks to get one. So we were in Sam's Club last night, and I bought him a package. I won't say they were delicious, they weren't, but they weren't the worst thing I've ever eaten. I will say, they were a nice texture, as opposed to the raw cookie dough mouth feel from Starbucks.

I wonder if a lot of people by the cake for 2 for $250. That would be interesting to know. $250 is a heck of a lot of money for an 8"cake.

Since I have not got to watch TV for awhile I don't even know if I know this Duff person. but I sure hope that he doesn't think that he can get a corner on the market and get cakepops copyrighted? Maybe his business, but not cakepops. they are never going to taste as good mass produced as they will when a cake decorator does them in a small quantity. I haven't been in starbucks for a few months, but the ones where I live I am sure do not sell them. I like starbucks, don't get me wrong, but I personally think that if a company is really customer service oriented that they would want to keep around an item that people like. I was in one a few months ago and asked when they were going to bring back their Cranberry orange muffins and they said they weren't. I said can't you tell them that people-customers like them and maybe they will consider it and they said no, they wouldn't consider it and I was not the first customer to tell them that they liked those muffins. I like their caramel apple cider in the winter time and thank goodness they still have that, but I just do not think that a company that won't even consider keeping around things that customers like is the kind of company that I want to do business with on a reg. basis. I asked them if say you had a hundred reg. customers tell you that they hated to see a reg. item go and you told the company that they wouldn't pay attention? They said no. So it wasn't just the item I liked. it is just their attitude.

You have to remember that Duff's shop is in high demand (even if the show is off-air). I thought the Cake for 2 was a brilliant idea. Doesn't everyone on this site cringe when a customer says, "Why so expensive, it's just cake." It's not just a $250 8" cake, it's a "Charm City" cake. They opened up their customer base immensely since their min for a custom cake is $1000. It's like buying designer clothes. Yes, you can buy a purse or shoes for $50 but you put a designer label on it, we're taking hundreds. (Look at what happened with the Missoni line at Target this week).

There's always a market and Duff is a brand. I'm so not surprised about the cake pops. There's a market for it, he filled a niche. If they put the Sam's club name on it instead of Duff, they wouldn't sell as much. I personally would rather buy from a bakery than from Sam's club for any baked good so I'm not their target customer, but someone out there is. I'd still buy it try it for fun, why not, my kids would DIG eating a "Duff" cakepop (even it is mass produced).

It is marketing genious, cause people are going to buy them like crazy! Now like someone else said, they aren't for me, but someone, actually a lot of someones, will buy them.

Walmart has sold ice cream for a while now that is red velvet with a picture of Duff on the container. It's made by Blue Bunny and it's the only flavor of ice cream I've ever had to throw out because my kids just wouldn't eat it.

Having tried that, I think I'll pass on the cake pops at Sams icon_biggrin.gif

While it sucks that companies don't always seem to listen to their customers, you don't really know what their bottom line is. Maybe while the muffin did really well in that store, it didn't do well in others. Maybe when they were looking at the sales of that muffin over the nation it was the lowest selling item, so they took it off and added something else in.

And it sounds bad, but really if 100 people asked for it, that would probably be a very small number compared to the number of people that go to the stores nationwide a day.

As far as having seasonal items, I get it. There may not be a big demand for the cider in the summer. But also by having a seasonal item, it brings people in to the store at that time, and then they will be tempted to buy other things. Same reason why stores offer sales and coupons.

As far as the Duff stuff goes, he's a big name, and people will buy it. I really don't think him or even Buddy are that big of a deal. And I have only bought very few of Duff's items. I hate paying a ton of money for a product just because it has his name on it.

Texas Sugar, I got ya. when you explain it like that it is understandable. I just think that the stores them selves ought to at least offer to pass on the information. Even if they don't bring them back it seems like poor customer service to me.

I am also with you on the Duff items. I am not going to pay a high price on something just because of somebody's name being on it. It it is a good quality product then I will consider it, but not just because of the name on it.

Speaking of the Duff ice cream, the Red Velvet was horrible but I have to say, the Chocolate cake flavor was amazing.

The people that work at the stores may not now the reasons, or may not get a lot of information on the why an item is being pulled.

Michaels and Wilton do the same thing. Every year they discontinue things that are in the store and bring in new things. Some items may be things I like and buy often. If I asked one of the employees I can tell you that they wouldn't know what to tell me about why they don't carry it any more, other than Michaels decided not to carry it in the store.

Brownie cake? Where did I miss that? I have looked at all the flavors of cake in the gourmet cake flavors list and there were many of them. Was Brownie cake one of them? if so I missed it. If not would someone send me the recipe or send me to the recipe? Thanks.
