One wedding cake that is driving me insane! I've been working on it all day. Yes, all day. I just had to ice and fondant them. The bottom tier (12 inch round) is being impossible. The top layer cracked but I repaired it. I got it iced, sides were straight. I put the fondant on it, the sides were very flared. I tried to mush and smooth, but no luck.

I took off the fondant and saw that the top layer cracked all the way across somehow. I had an extra layer so I removed the bad one, pulled back the filling towards the center, double dammed the danged thing (double ring, double high), assembled it once more, and left it to settle.

It looked good so I iced it. The side are straight. I even asked for a second opinion. I get the fondant on, it's messed up again. This time the flair starts an inch down from the top. I smoothed, I smooshed, I pricked it with a pin in case it's air. It's still messed up.

I have now made another batch of fondant and await the wisdom of cakecentral. What's going on with this cake??????

cheatize - are you freezing the cake before the fondant? I've been doing that lately, and I mean get a good half-hour freeze on the bc, and it stays put while I smooth the fondant on.

I am starting on a beach ball cake for a small pool party on sunday. I'm using the ball pan and I know I'm supposed to cut off a small section to make it level, but do I need center support as well? Thanks in advance for any tips!

with that petal effect icing...or the swirl roses, haven't decided yet.

Yeah Leah, I'll bet your cakes are amazing...would love to see more pics of them!

No, of the three tiers, this is the only one that hasn't been in the fridge.

I ripped off the fondant once more. I see nothing going on that would cause this. I went ahead and trimmed around the whole thing just to make sure my naked sides are straight. I'm now down to using cake spackle on the sides just in case it needs the support. I think I'll stick in the fridge for a bit. At this point, it can't hurt.

Bohemiagetsajob: I've never done anything more than trim a piece off the bottom. However, I do understand that too much outward force can cause it to break, but I have no fix or prevention for it. Hopefully someone else has an idea for you.

Today has been the Worst baking day ever! I posted for some advise earlier:

http://cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopicp-7200362.html#7200362

I can't seen to make this cake work. One disaster after another. I really like the taste but the consistency is terrible- too dense, heavy and sticky.
I was so excited because all my decorations are done, the filling is ready to go and this was MY birthday cake.

After some advise (hoping for replies) I'll try again.

I just finished making some modeling chocolate for the first time. I am going to make a construction worker cake for next weekend and was going to try making the tools out of modeling chocolate. I also want to use the chocolate to practice making roses for a wedding cake I am making for my sister in October.

How do you store items made with modeling chocolate? Also how far ahead can you make them?

Hi everyone!

Well, it's been a busy week for me. I did the cake I mentioned last Friday that was out of my comfort zone. Black cake. Never really ever considered a black cake! LOL! But it worked out beautifully! In fact, it's inspired me to add to my wedding demos with a black and white cake later this year when I have some time to play.

Second cake was a different type of challenge. I was asked to make a cake that resembled a crocheted panel purse because the birthday girl was known for making them in the 70's but still have it look like a cake. I crochet so I took some time to actually look at the stitches and then, with a whole bunch of royal, just worked till I thought it looked like the panels had actually been crocheted together! Whew!

Both Birthday Parties were a hit. Got a wedding order from one and an anniversary cake from the other so good week! Both are in my albums here.

I still have "dinner party" cupcakes tomorrow to do. Just 15 and not very hard to do so basically my work week is over. Mainly working on fondant pieces to go on a wedding cake for next weekend. My work is slowing down for a few weeks. Middle of October it picks back up again till New Years so I'm going to make myself enjoy the slower weeks and any breaks I get!

Safe deliveries for those of you who are experiencing some difficult weather. And for those who are commemorating 9-11 my heart goes out to you. We lost someone on Flight 93 that day so Sunday will be a quiet day here at home. See ya'll next week!

Cat

Good evening ya'll (and morning to ya'll in about 45 mins!) I have had a HORRIBLE DAY...I mean, it could be worse, but I have a booked weekend, 5 cakes...first off, yesterday my BC was a PITA and did not want to come out smooth icon_sad.gif, then today, that mean BC just would not smooth right, crusted too fast...kept sliding around getting all crumby while icing a chocolate cake....fun stuff huh!? Got a fondant cake (will be in my gallery shortly) I hand piped my best work yet....with BC instead of royal...BIG MISTAKE...didn't do any research on it, but I bought some silver icing glaze stuff pre mixed instead of having to mix it myself...well, doesn't look pretty on a soft BC icon_mad.gif So, scrapped all that beautiful piping off and replaced them with some hand painted swirls instead. Then the worse part...take one of the gold paint...all splotchy, drying way to fast on me..then I BROKE MY BOW!!!!!!! icon_cry.gif wELL, had to make a new one..mixed more lemon juice with the gold dust and just did a lighter coat and called it a night! (after making another bow of course!) Now, I am taking a break while I finish up one more cake due int he morning, then when I wake up, back to decorating to have a cake finished(TRY TO HAVE IT FINISHED) BY 12...off to wally world for a bridal shower gift, back home, grab cake, head to shower, back home, bake and decorate cupcakes for another bday party sunday...whoo..did I mention I have a VERY needy husband and two kids ages 3 and 5? YEA thanks for the vent LOL that was a little longer than I thought it would be icon_redface.gif

Just finished a Cars 2 cake....inspired by somebody here on CC. Not sure who at this moment, but my friend LOVED the cake. It was so fun to do. (sorry no pics up)
And did a small square, off centered 2 tiered cake. Black and white. Very cute. That one was for a little girl in my church who turned 13. Mom was happy with the cake!
Should be making roses for a birthday cake due on Monday, but just can't seem to get motivated. Maybe later this weekend. icon_cool.gif

well its now 1:10 and I have just finished the "free" wedding cake my daughter gave as a gift. I am not happy with it. Just looks blah. she didn't want anything but hot pink and black ribbon around the base.. no boarders anymore on cakes. and she wanted a few pink flowers here and there on the cake. then she txts me earlier that she didn[t get a cake topper and could I put flowers on it.. i am so mad.. i have no clue where she exxpects me to go get flower and decorate her cake. I tried all week to find the flowers that I do have. Hard to find hot pink flowers in the fall. Not many places around here but superwalmarts with very little crafts.

I did the main cake 14/10/6 and then two 10 side cakes (all square).
odd.. chocolate cake with chocolate fudge and strawberries and french vanilla cake with strawberries and custard. Its been in the fridge all day... and will be until we deliver it around 2pm tomorow.

I just don't know what to do about the flowers. I have tons in the basement but I think they are just white roses and she did say that she didnt like roses.

I don't know.. I am not even going to take a photo of i..just don't feel good about it. Until it gets "flowered" .. it just doesn't deserve to have its photo takem

Labmom: I kind of agree. This wedding cake just has the ribbon at the base of the tiers but it has a topper that will go on it. Just ribbon is just...nothing.

Tonight's project has been iced and covered in fondant for the third time. It's still got one side that's not right so we'll call that "the back." All that's left is the supports but I have to wait for hubby to do that in the morning since it would take me another whole day for me to get straws cut to the exact same lengths.

I'm off to bed soon. I've been sick all week. I did this cake with mask and gloves on even though I shouldn't be contagious anymore. I am whooped, whooped, whooped!

Yes, I would support them. They are very heavy and could sink. I would use atleast 3 support rods (straws, sucker sticks, dowels, ect) under a small cardboard circle.

I'm always critical of my portraits, but they're so hard to do since it's a human face.

Speaking of portraits, I find a message on on of my flickr accounts from the wife of everth cabrera of the san diego padres, and it included a picture of them with a cake I did with his portrait on it. I'm always happy to see people enjoying cakes I've made.
