I have my second cake order due thursday from a gal who wants a farm cake. She is giving me free range but it's for an adult male.

I would like to make a fence, horses, cows, hay bales....maybe a barn but I'm not even sure where to begin right now....

Keep in mind, I'm only charging her $50 plus tax for the cake...I'm giving her a great deal and we both know it. The cake is a 16" square.

HELP?!

Hi,
How about something like these pics?
http://www.shereenscakesandbakes.co.uk/novelty_cakes/adultnovelty/farm.html

Also if its for an adult, why not make a little figure of him as the farmer?

hope this helps! good luck! icon_smile.gif

I think the idea of a fbct of a John Deere tractor and a farmer on it would be realitively an inexpensive way to go. That is a pretty big cake you are doing for that much. Of course, I realize that you have already stated that you have given her a big discount and she is aware of it. I am doing a wafer paper picture on a 11 x 15 cake and some simple borders and b-day greeting and I am charging $45.00 for it. I have done some pretty elaborate cakes for a whole lot less and just for gifts because I knew the people could not afford it(meaning the cake that I made. they offered though)and to me that is what counted. But I am trying to get smarter and I want it to look really nice too, but I am also going to be out of town the week before it is due so it has to be simple. I had one client who I got from a craigslist ad and that was a flop to say the least so I am hoping that this situation will be much better and I wll continue to get more orders from it.. Best wishes. Let us know how it came out, will you? Thanks.

I'm working on it at the moment....I got it baked, torted and the crumb coat put on. (Huge step for me because I almost ALWAYS break my cakes)

Still working out all the details in my head but I plan on making a few fondant/gum paste farm animals and a fence...we'll see how worn out I am by tomorrow!

Pictures to follow I promise...thank you for all of your help...

Any tips on creating farm animals? I looked at a few videos...I tried making a zebra (pics on my profile)

lenamay: your zebra is adorable, but I don't really think of a zebra as a barn animal. BUt hey we do have artistic license right? So add one in there if you like. But if you can do a zebra that well you wiill have no problems with your other animals other than not having enough time for them to dry. Best wishes with it.

The zebra was a cake for someone else...I used the body of a horse and just painted him to look like a zebra

lenamay: am I seeing things or is the Barn a cookie? Your animals are cute though. Even if you rushed them. Did your customer like the cake?

Lenamay, good for you!! I know that when I have had cakes that my friends and clients like that they are super pleased, but I have never had anyone pay double what I had asked for it. That has to be a first. Can you put a picture up of the completed cake? Thanks.

The pictures that are up are as close to finished as I have...the only difference is the fence. My customer took pictures and I will share them when she gets them to me!
