I am doing a 3D cake this weekend which I've never done before, its for a friend and I am not going to charge, its my bday gift to him. For future references if I was to get an order off this cake for more 3D cakes, how do you all price yours??? Is it the same as your regular pricing or more or less? I've been under charging on my cakes for a LONG time and I want to make sure that I am doing it right for a general area.

I am soooo glad that you asked this question. I am faced with the same dilemma as well, although the cake that I am doing is for a well-known party planner/decorator. I recently reconnected with her and she asked me to send her a drawing for a cake for a 70th birthday party featuring local sports teams. I came up with the idea of a sports bag with all of the items coming out of the bag and various sports balls around the base with sneakers, etc. I know that the time involved to make all of the pieces will be enormous and I, too, am unsure of how to charge this person. I realize that what I charge her now will set a precedence for the future. I usually charge $5pp to start with for a fondant cake and then up-charge accordingly. However, this cake is only for about 50-60 people yet the work involved is so arduous. How do you charge for creating specific items like that as well as a 3-D cake? You don't want to undercut yourself and give your talent away, yet you don't want to take advantage of people either. Help!!!!!
