Looking to make an emo/gothic cake. The following was requested....

Chains
Studs
Skulls
Zippers (Zip & unzipped)
Spikes

Any tips or advice anyone has to offer would be greatly appreciated!!!

Also any advice on how to achieve a shiny silver for the studs, spikes & chains?

As far as achieving a shiny silver, you can use luster dust. Just dust the powder over the items you've made for the cake. HTH

I made a cake similar to this recently that had basically a studded ribbon made of fondant/gumpaste that went around the bottom tier, and had some molded gumpaste skulls on the top tier.

I would suggest going to craft stores since they just got in their halloween stuff. Some of the candy molds and such could work well.

As for color scheme, dark colors are best. Lots of blacks and dark reds.

Hi,
Oh my god! this is totally up my street! Because I'm an emo! icon_biggrin.gif

Is it a tiered cake? boy or girl emo?

For the shiny silver things, lustre dust or silver liquid food colouring, you paint the things with a little paint brush.

Yeah definatley dark colours, Black, Red, Purple. (Grey could be thrown in too!)
You coul have two tiers, one bottom round cake, and the top tier could be a big skull!
Oh it would look so cool, you could have the closed zips as the border, around the bottom of the cake, and the chains could be drapped from the top of the cake, instead of the drop line piping you get on normal cakes.
You could have a massive skull on top of the cake, as like the centre piece, and the skull could look emo! It could have a stud through its lip! The recent trand with emos is to have a stud in each corner of the bottom lip, so the skull could have that! The skull could also be wearing like a "dog collar" black with spikes coming out of it! And the unzipped zips could be the decoration for the for the bottom tier, all different colour zips!

WOW I wish I was making this cake! icon_biggrin.gif

Hope this helps! Good luck! thumbs_up.gif

I think I love u even more lol.

I'm more of a mumsy emo at heart these days icon_redface.gif but this sounds like an awesome cake. How big do you need to make it? The skull as a top tier sounds awesome. I was also thinking black red purple and grey colours. I actually got a silver lustre spray, which I use for bigger items because its quicker and apparently i'm lazy. That and when I mixed lustre dust with vodka to paint I always wasted loads! I still use the dust for small stuff though.

I was thinking like a black studded belt as the border around the bottom tier, the chains like JamAndButtercream said sound great around the top, or you could just criss cross them at lots of little points around the cake and then put spikes around the top coming out kind of diagonally so they aren't facing straight up but aren't coming out on a right angle to the cake. you could maybe put the zip on top of the cake, and like open it up so it looks like the skull has come from underneath the zip if that makes sense? Or you could put a zip as the mouth like one of the slipknot masks, you could also give it a silver spike mohawk, basically just big silver spikes in a line over its head. I would love to make this cake lol. Hope this helps...

kenidicalamity - Thanks for the great tip about craft stores. Perfect time to buy molds for such a cake!!!

JamAndButtercream - Such great tips. Thanks!! The cake is for a 15 year old girl, but she does not want it to be girly what so ever.

jennifercullen - Thanks for the tips, lustre spray sounds pretty awesome. As far as size I'm thinking a 12in round and maybe an 8 in round on top of that. Skull as a tier does sound pretty cool though.
