I just bought a whole bunch of fondant (fondx) on sale. It has the expiration date of May 2012. Does the fondant really expire that fast? Thanks!

That's probably a sell by date.

How much did you buy?

I bought about 10 tubs in different colors. I am a hobby baker and do not bake cakes to sell. I was wondering if I could at least get an year out of the fondant!

I purchased wilton fondant on clearance from a store that was closing and it was never opened just sat in on my shelves waiting for me to do something with it. Occasionaly I would get a call about something and make what was needed out of some and put back in the box. It has lasted a long time.

Then I bought some clearance again from HSN and it was dated this may 5/11 and it again is new in the box. I am trying to use it as fast as I can but have never had problems with the wilton past the exp date, but have used it for items that I know that are not going to be eaten.

I have had other brands (satin ice) that were past the expire date again not opened (ordered in for a wedding that changed there mind) and when I did get around to using the hot pink color that it was.. it was not workable at all. it was almost slimy. total loss, The same with chocopan.

so it must be depending on the brand how good they keep after the exp date
and again depending what you want to use them for.

It is 4 months old now:

From http://www.caljavaonline.com

FondX will last 12 months in an un-opened pail. Please find the appropriate expiration date on the pail.

Satin-Ice: Product shelf life of rolled fondant is 12 to 18 months, depending on the product color, and is indicated on each product label.

I use FondX almost exclusively, and believe me, it's great for way longer than a year. Once it's opened, it starts drying out - although that takes a pretty long time, too, if you re-wrap it properly - but unopened, I've used it 18-20 months after I've bought it with no problem. I also use Satin Ice red and black. These, too, last for a really long time unopened, although they dry out faster than the FondX once they're opened. This might have to do with the amount of food dye these colors have - it takes an awful lot of coloring to get red and black (which is why I buy thes two ready-made!).

Hi there!

I'm apologize in advance for this newbie question. I have a tub of Satin Ice Rolled Fondant that is pretty much unopened (I tried to pull the protective ring about an inch months before but decided to save it for later).

Now that it is "later", I notice that the Sell by date is September 30, 2011. Does this mean that it is expired or do I have 12-18 months still left on this tub.

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

"Sell by" is not the same thing as "Use by", but in this case, I think I'd ask the Satin Ice people directly about how long you have after that date and how long you have after opening it.

Even if the fondant is expired, it's not a lost cause. I keep a bucket of expired fondant scraps and use them to practice with. I make up cookies with no flavoring and practice my techniques, or make a cake dummy and decorate it up. It's a great way to practice, get a photo of your work to build your portfolio and learn new techniques (AND you've wasted nothing!) icon_lol.gif

I called Satin Ice and was told that for the product, Satin Ice White/Vanilla Fondant, it has a shelf life of 18 months.

They manufactured this particular product 15 months ago from the sell by date: 9/30/2011. Given that it has an 18 month shelf life (all their products have different shelf life from 12-18 monts), I have three more months from September 30 = December 30, 2011.

As bobwonderbuns said, expired fondants can be used for practice which I certainly need! icon_biggrin.gif
