Wasn't sure where to put this, but who else in Texas is excited. Legal, here we come.....
I'm soooooo excited! I actually quit mjob of 30 yrs. and 1 day to do cakes full-time. AT HOME!!!!!!
Is it true? The law has changed in Texas? I don't know how I missed it except I've moved and it's been incredibly busy the last few months. If this is true, I'm on top of the world!! yehaa!
twinsmake5, Yes you missed it It's official on September 1. For more information visit
www.texascottagefoodlaw.com
The website is organized by KelleyM and there is a forum to ask questions regarding the law and starting up a business but please read the FAQ first. Most of the questions people have are already answered right there.
We're all so excited we could just die. Just an FYI, the local health departments seem unimpressed by the new law and some are trying to setup road blocks. Be strong and if you have any problems contact Texas Cottage Food Law. Everyone is trying to stay on top of any rogue health department issues. Best of luck to you.
As I keep repeating (and some of you are probably sick of hearing), PLEASE familiarize yourselves with the text of the law, the summary, and the FAQ before you begin selling! It is your responsibility to know the rules, and your rights!

kelley, the website is lookin beautiful! thanks for all your hard work!
I'm very excited!!! Just bummed that there's a cap on the amount of revenue you can make and no internet sales! But it's a HUGE start and I'm ready to go! Already have a cake order that I'll be starting tomorrow! Printing out some small labels tonight regarding not being inspected by the health department. Just thought I'd print some logos and put the disclaimer about the health department on there and affix them to all cake boxes, etc. Happy baking my fellow home baking Texans!
I can understand the cap on income though. I'm going to guess the thought behind that is if you are making a lot of cakes for a large group of people and are above a 'small business' status. Or they may feel that if you are making $50,000 a year on cakes you can afford a bakery rather than doing it out of your home.

Yeah, I figured that's what they thought too. Still a bummer because Lord knows that it's expensive to start a bakery. In Houston, just the permits alone seem like they could run you over $50,000!!! I would LOVE to just do cakes, but if my cap is $50,000, I need to keep my day job so I can use my salary to get my shop rolling. I personally feel like Harris county wanted to limit us because they know how much money they will lose by allowing home bakers to run a full-fledge, business from home, including internet sales, markets, etc. No one would be opening shops because of the price of the permits! Then you have your bakery equipment! Whew!! You would think in this economy our government (local and state) would be behind people's ability to create their own jobs and possibly jobs for others, but it all boils down to how much can the state and cities afford to lose. They know this business is profitable and they want to get their piece of the pie too by forcing us to rent shops and buy permits. It sucks, but we'll press on and keep pushing.
Thanks to the supporters of SB 81 and all who worked so hard to get this bill passed!! What a great day in Texas!!!
