I have a friend who wants a lap top cake for her hubby's birthday.
I have no clue how to get the "Screen " to stand up...Is the screen suppose to be made of cake..? I would think it would fall apart..Or should I make a large cookie and decorate that..
any thoughts are welcome!
thank you!

Why not use RKT for the screen? It should stand up well. It can be decorated like cake, but is not as heavy or fragile. I've used this for several cakes and had much success. Good luck!!

i second the rice krispie treats, for a smooth finish before fondant, cover it in melted chocolate

How about just covering a cake board in fondant instead of RKT?

Thank you all for the ideas! I think I will end up making the rice krispie treats and covering it with melted chocolate before icing...I never thought of that!
The letters of the key board are going to be little squares of chocolate bars with a kit kat for the shift bar...normally would be fondant but the husband is a candy bar addict so candy bars it is.

The cake board sounds like a better idea it will look more realistic because it's very thin.

I've done laptop cakes before and used a tuffboard, which is a plastic corrugated cake board that you can bend into position. the Rice Krispies will probably fall apart if you try to stand them up like that. I'd use a board and cover it with fondant. http://acaketorememberva.blogspot.com/2011/02/product-review-tuffboards.html

Thanks again...the more I thought about the rkt, the more I pictured it falling apart...so may just have decorate a cake board. A friend of mine suggested using gum paste as well..Or I could just make it lay flat. I saw one on here that looked pretty good....like my friend said it would be easier to transport. Thanks for all the ideas. I appreciate them. icon_biggrin.gif

I used a couple boards and brackets (at about a 135° angle) from the hardware store to make a stand for my DS and laptop cakes. I discovered that gravity is an enemy so keep the cake on top a bit thinner (lighter) and let the fondant harden a bit with the cake propped up (so the 2 parts form a V) and then things don't slide.

I was happy with how the DS turned out - I was too rushed on the laptop cake and wasn't entirely pleased with it. But the stand worked out really well. icon_smile.gif Very solid!

I did one where I had a piece of stainell steel, 13 x15 inched bent at an angle. I slid half under the cake, and used the other half to pile cake on. Looked cute. No pic though...
