How To Get Cakes To Stand Up On Their Side

I'm making a phineas and ferb cake for my little cousin, i have a TON of ideas. I sketched out a bunch and one of my designs requires a round cake to be cut in half and turned on it's side. Before i choose my final design i wanted to know how you would get the cake to do this, and be sturdy.
Thanks in advance!
Will the round cake cut in half on it's side be the actual cake or will it be on top of a sheet or another round? If it is not the primary cake, then why not use RKT? You could easily use the cake pan to get the size and shape you want without the fragility of cake. I've used RKT for similar situations and it worked great.
BTW, my son loves Phineas and Ferb so please post pics...LOL

Maybe something like what was done for this base drum.
