I am doing a cake with a basketball sitting on a basketball court and need to make it with a shiney woodgrain look. How do I get the shiney effect?

I use a 50/50 mixture of light corn syrup and vodka. The vodka evaporates quickly and the corn syrup doesn't stay sticky like when you use it on it's own. It dries very smooth and shiny. I used it for a shiny black leather look on this Elvis cake. http://cakecentral.com/gallery/2135042

Ollehar, I just brushed the syrup/vodka mixture on some black fondant hydrangea blossoms for a cake due in a couple weeks and it's fabulous. They are like black patent leather flowers...sooo cool. Thanks so very much for sharing this great technique
No license or insurance. Put lead wires in cakes, never wash hands, cake boards are used cardboard. No contracts cause I can't read or write. No lawyer cause I'm judgment proof. I bake with old mix boxes found behind Walmart. Now about my question

Glad it worked for you! I learned of it from someone here on CC. And yes, I just brush it on.
