Please Take My Poll: Scractch Or Cake Mix
Decorating By MariaLovesCakes Updated 11 Sep 2005 , 10:28am by SugarCreations
I have heard so much talk about cake box mixes Vs. scratch cakes, I just have to ask.
Which one do you use:
Cake Box Mix or Scratch?
I will start: I use scratch mixes.
I just want to see an overall count of how many of you uses which?
Thanks.
I use box cake mixes (Duncan Hines, Pillsbury, etc.)
Honestly, I have been afraid of moving to other types. Just worried that they won't taste as well.
Thanks!
P.S. Great post!
ummmmmmmm Before I got into cake decorating I always made scratch cakes but now I'll probably be doing both. However I see myself using box mix more, maybe 70% of the time. But that may change up or down. Whenever this topic comes up on CC both sides make really good points so I find that I'm always changing my mind on which one I should use!!

I like the ease and consistency I get with box, but dh is always after me to make scratch (that's all his mother ever made!) so mine are never as 'good' as his mother's.
i use mix duncan hines. I have made a few from scratch but wasnt happy with the results. I still experiment with scratch uintil i find one i love.
mainly cake mixes....I have found that if I make a cake from scratch it is drier or less tasty...unless of course I use a tres leches mixture then it is wonderful!.. so I would say 97% cake box mixes, and then only duncan hines.
I use pillsbury and the scratch thing is not for me.. I have tried at least a thousand.. well maybe not a thousand.. either I am not doing it right, or I just haven't found one that tasted good or rises..

here here!!!! unless I use a tres leches mixture or make family recipe cakes (i.e. red velvet, carrot, etc) they are dry!
Both.
I'm starting to favor the scratch cakes. The cake mix is now starting to seem bland.
so far i have only used cax mixes. I am making one this month for my memaw and wanted to make one from scratch.
I pulled a receipe from this site hoping to make it.
if not I think I will use the cake mix doctor receipe.
I love scratch cakes but I'm having trouble getting them to rise too. I do like scratch cakes too.
Mixes. Being at high altitude, it's been easier for me to use mix. Also easy and fast. I do want to experiment with scratch though as I wonder if w/o the preservatives, I'll notice a taste difference.

I have tried many scratch ones and finaly narrowed them down to two recipes that I like.
I use the wash or soaking syrups to flavor them and moist them. They keep for a while and taste delicious and moist.
I have tried box mixes and have doctored them, but still prefer scratch.
So, far, as I can see looks like most of you prefer cake mixes...
I feel lonely now!!!
PS: I would be cool if we could all meet and make our best recipes to taste our own cakes and share secrets...
I do both..depends what it's for...For CA State Fair Cake Show I made from scratch because it was a strict rule they have..Everything was from scratch from Icing to Filling to Decoration. Maybe that's why God made me win 4 awards (incl Blue Ribbon) since I was very honest about my work. I don't think others cheated, but I'm sure some did. Really with 200 entries, how can they be sure ! ??
Only use boxes. I use regular cake mixes for the regular price & I offer deluxe flavors for .25 per person more. Like Red Velvet, carrot etc. Helen
Scratch here I like it when I'm creaming the butter and sugar, adding eggs one by one, adding dry ingredients alternately with wet ingredients than mixing it all together (sounds weird ) I think most of you use cake mixes and now I'm thinking to try different brands of cake mixes so I can tell which one tastes better
Haven't seen yet Duncan mixes here.

Before I started cake decorating, I was an all scratch gal, but now I like the convenice of box mix using the cake mix extender
My cake deceorating always said to use cake mixes since the results are more consistent than scratch. I ALWAYS use Betty Crocker cake mixes and I get raves!!! I used to alternate Betty Crocker and Pillsbury depending on what was on sale, but about a year ago, Pillsbury changed their formula and every cake I baked would split right down the middle. I wrote to them and they sent me coupons for.... what else? Their cake mix!!!!

I am a mix girl here. I usually doctor them up somehow though. I do make a yellow cake that is just the mix with cake mix extender added and it's pretty good.
DUNKEN HINES FOR ME. IF i AM DOING A WEDDING CAKE OR STACKED CAKE I USE 1 POUND CAKE MIX WITH IT. JUST FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS ON THE BOX.

I use both. but i do prefer to make it from scratch. it's a nice feeling to know you can actually make it from scratch.
i use cake mix for people who like the commercial taste and from scratch for those who prefer a homemade cake.
