So...I am making a tiered cake and managed to partially crack one of the bottom, 12" layers. Is it worth saving? The crack doesn't go all the way through, and I have some hope that once covered with ganache and fondant it will stay put.

But, it's the bottom tier on a 3-tiered cake (12", 9", 6"), and I am transporting the layers from Dallas to Houston (4.5 hours by car). What have y'all done with cracked layers in the past? Just trash it and make a new one? I have enough time, as I don't leave for Houston until Friday, but I didn't know what you would suggest. Help!

If I had enough time and energy I would bake another layer and use that cracked one for cake pops or something. If it was just going maybe 20 minutes away, I would say no problem, but I would not want to go to that much time and effort and money and have the whole thing fall apart when I got there. If it was a top layer, I would maybe consider it, but not the bottom layer. I personally want a very safe and solid foundation for the rest of the cake. Good luck.

Thanks Jules. That's what I was thinking, too. Luckily I have the time and ingredients on hand. I will whip up another layer tonight and hopefully be good to go. Fingers crossed we don't hit any speedbumps on the way down to Houston!

beesweetbakeshoppe, Good luck. YOu are a very courageous lady taking a cake that far in this heat. I hope you have a van. I would wear a sweater and turn the AC all the way up for the entire trip down there. On top of that I would have every vent for the AC directed toward the cake that I could. I get nervous even with an hour's trip in this heat. I have humidity and heat to deal with also and I am shouting hallelujah!! when I have made it to my destination and the cake is still intact. and not melted.

The same thing happened to me today! 12 inch layer cracked as I was moving it to wrap it and put in the refrigerator.
Good idea to save it for Cale Pops. I assume I can just freeze the broken layer until I am ready to make pops!?

Yeah, I would. Then you have some available when you need it.
