Spacers? what to use ...

Good morning everyone,

I just did a 4 tier 1M rose cake and was wondering what I could have used inbetween the layers to give it just a bit of 'space' between each tier. Like a 2" break just to give it more height and break up the colors a bit.

Is there anything you would recommend? Anything that is disposable or do you have to make sure to get the parts back later?

Just wondering for future. I thought it would have looked nicer with white breaks inbetween.

Or styrofoam wrapped in wrapping paper (I usually use plain black because it has the most striking effect).

So where are you guys getting your styrofoam?

Most of my cakes are last minute, friends asking oh... can you do one for next week?? LOL So I don't have a lot of planning time.

Do you have to cut it yourself or is it sold in the height & shape already?

They are usually sold in cake decorating stores in different sizes and shapes, most commonly square and round specifically for the purpose of using them with cakes. That's what bakeries use as dummies - they stack them up and decorate like they would a regular wedding cake and put it out for display!

If you can't find them locally, you can buy them online at Global Sugar Art or most other cake sites! HTH icon_smile.gif

I just used spacers for the 1st time, I looked everywhere for 2" tall styrofoam. Could not find them thru any of my distributors, online or at the cake store. I finally found 2" tall round styrofoam in all different sizes in the floral department at Michaels. I pinned cardboard cake rounds (glue wouldn't hold) on both ends and wrapped in ribbon (floral styrofoam was weird texture and I didn't want it touching the edible cake). Worked great and was pretty cheap. Looking forward to using spacers for other cakes now that I know how to use them!
