Hey everyone!
I'm panicking beyond belief right now. I am working on a wedding cake for tomorrow (Aug 13) and guess what I did this morning. I tripped while carrying my container of gumpaste flowers and smashed them everywhere! Have no time to make new ones, fortunately I'm doing this for a friend who was very understanding and is willing to accept fresh flowers in lieu of the gumpaste flowers.

I'm so incredibly stressed over this I'd like to crawl into a hole and die at the moment.

I've never done fresh flowers on a cake before. I went to the florist today and bought organic roses, freesia, gypsophila and several snippets of ivy. I know its suggested not put them directly into the cake, and I'm fearful of them wilting. Would wrapping them in moist papertowel and then in skrink wrap work? I want to put them stems (safely) directly into the cake so they sit securely but I worry soo much about the wilting.
Also should I do a cascade or just a couple flowers on each tier and across the base? The cakes are 6", 10", 14" roundm iced in buttercream with 3/4" ribbon on each tier and swiss dots. I'm worried that a cascade would make it look too busy. There wont be flowers on the top tier as they have a topper already provided.

Any suggestions or ideas are greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!

Wilton carries fresh flower holders, you can actually put water into the spikes and then insert onto the cake. They sell a variety of sizes and shapes, this is a simple solution. I know I didnt answer your shrink wrap question but I thought I'd mention this idea. HTH good luck, fresh flowers in my taste are a very classic look.

Sorry to hear about your damaged gumpaste flowers. But your selection of fresh flowers sounds beautiful. Numerous times I've used fresh flowers to decorate cakes and I never had a problem with wilting. If the cake is going to sit out for a very long time and/or it will be in an unusually warm setting: cut the stems to the desired length, dip each stem in water and immediately place a small piece of foil around the stem bottom. The few drops of water caught under the foil will be enough.

When you start placing the flowers around the cake you'll get a feel for what is best. You can't go wrong using fresh flowers. Your cake will be gorgeous!

Thanks so much for the replies! Unfortunately its too late to in the evening to find the Wiltons flower picks or that would've been a good solution.

I have to ask, with regards to wrapping the stem in foil, do I insert the Flower & foil directly into the cake? The foil wont give the cake a "tinny" taste will it?

Thanks again!

I would not put fresh flowers on the cake until the day of the wedding. You might want to play around with them and decide where you want them to go, but I would keep them in water overnight. You could go for the picks in the morning.

Hope I'm not too late with a reply... Foil will not affect the taste; it will only be touching cake for a few short hours. It's no different from wrapping leftover food in foil. Your cake will be beautiful, please post a link here to your pictures!

Well\\, the cake is assembled. My local Michaels is out of Wiltons flower picks icon_sad.gif So I will likely wrap in foil. I have to leave with the cake by 12:30, so I wont be applying the flowers until just before then. I will post photos once it is complete! Thanks for the help everyone!
