Wow! I am so blown away by the fantastic cakes you've all posted here! So glad you all shared your labors of love. True artistry!! I have one cake that I would never attempt to replicate or put a price tag on. It wasn't for my child but for a child through Icing Smiles. I spent many hours carving figures out of rice krispy treats and modeling chocolate for this one; http://cakecentral.com/gallery/2072780

Amazing cakes everyone. Thanks so much for sharing icon_biggrin.gif

I have one more I would NEVER attempt again no matter what. Thomas the Train and I had a lot of fights and he caused me several mental breakdowns...

Dont feel bad ColeAlayne, it happens a lot... You post with the attempt at humor or a joke and you get hammered by some. Happened to me once, posted a heading I thought was funny and about half of the comments skewered me... the, other half, fortunately, got it. icon_smile.gif Chin up!

ColeAlayne your Pillow Pets are adorable!!! I have so many cakes saved that I would like to do for my grandkids that I either need a LOT more grandkids or my grandkids are going to have to stay little for a LONG time!!! LOL

Here is my latest "Labor of Love" for my youngest grandchild. A Dora the Explorer cake for her 2nd birthday. I spent many hours decorating this cake. It has a different scene on every side of the cake. But it was all worth it. It's 2 months later and my granddaughter still pulls me to the computer and says "Look at Dora birthday cake". She loves to sit on my lap and look at cakes on CC. I think we have another future cake decorator in the making!

So many great cakes! How true that we will do things for our kids that others couldn't pay us to do. My "kid" wanted a dragon when he turned 30. It took me hours to put on the individual scales. I just wish I had more of a setting for the dragon instead of the white covered board.

Wow I am truly amazed by all these cakes. They're all amazing! My cakes are pretty basic, I'm just a beginner, but it takes me all day to do just a basic one. God knows how long it takes to do cakes as pretty as the ones shown!
I don't think some people realise how much money, and more importantly, time and effort that goes into making cakes.
You guys are truly talented. I just hope one day I can be half as good as you!

On a side note, I wish CC members could get back to the heart of what we do and leave all the bickering out!

I love these cakes. All so beautiful! You people are so flipping talented!!

My labor of love was for my son's third birthday. I had just started cake decorating less than 2 months prior and bit off more than I could chew especially since I had promised my daughter a princess cake too (double birthday party) so I was running between cakes trying to get it done before they woke up. I know it is far from perfect but he loved it. That morning, he woke up, came downstairs rubbing his eyes and leaned in to kiss me good morning. When he saw the cake, his eyes were as big as saucers and he squealed, "You did it, MOMMY! It's Lightning!!!!". Then he hugged me and said it was the bestest cake ever. I teared up right there. I admit it. Complete ball of mush.

The was the cake I made for my daughter (same night as the above cake).

My now 5 year old son loves Tom and Jerry and asked for the Tom and Jerry cake he saw in my Debbie Brown book. It was a challenge but how could I say no to him saying " I know you could do it." My husband helped by making Jerry for me out of fondant and I made Jerry out of RKT. He also suggested making Tom's eyes different and added whiskers to it (which made the cake extra special to me because he became involved). The cake bulged a little due to the fact that I used bettercreme which I later learned was a no no icon_smile.gif

If you want a photo to show up in your post, here's how:

First upload the photo into an online photo site like Photobucket (getting a photobucket account is easy and FREE) then just copy the photo's image code (IMG Code) from photobucket and paste it into your post (on a line by itself, so it doesn't have any other text or punctuation against it). Then when you hit 'submit comment' the photo will display in the thread. Easy. thumbs_up.gif

Photobucket is here: http://photobucket.com/

I'm pretty sure you can also use Flickr like this too - just look for the image code (IMG code) and copy and paste it.

Most of my cakes are labors of love because they're done for friends/family/co-workers. I do usually get reimbursed for my cost, thankfully!
My best (worst?) labor of love was my very first cake- that I did for my wedding reception! I had no budget for cake, so it was either make my own or get one from Walmart (no!). I did several practice runs, and I figured I could do it. It was 3 tiers, wrapped in ribbon, with little vines and tiny flowers scattered around it. The decoating came out really well! However- we got married in July and I made the mistake of putting the cake in the fridge for a little while before transporting it in hot cars. Yeah. It was a bit melty when we got there, and the fondant was somewhat bubbly. It still looked ok, and people were impressed that I'd made it myself. But damn, it took me FOREVER. It tasted good, though! I wish I had a pic but only have a hard copy. One day I'll get around to scanning it in.
