Hi, i need to make a dummy 3tier cake fondant decorated.

is there any cheaper alternative to cover the Styrofoam cake other than fondant and still look good? doesn't have to be edible since its just a dummy for display.

i heard that some sort of gypsum can be used. is it true?

Thanks

I have the same question! I have searched the web for information and can't seem to find anything. There was this artificial icing on ebay...but it would cost me an arm and leg to ship it to me. I think fondant is the only option. Maybe royal icing...as it hardens....I would suggest asking a Cake shop...especially if they have them displayed in their windows.

3-4 coats of royal icing would look nice.

You can use royal icing. Perm a Ice or even spackle (I didn't have luck with spackle myself).

Usually when I need to cover a cake in fondant I make homemade fondant. It is cheaper in the long run if you are doing a big cake, and you can leave the flavorings out of it.

I haven't done it, but I have a friend who uses joint compound. She mixes it to the consistency she wants and it looks great.

If you can't find them locally, I think Dallas Foam is the cheapest:
http://www.dallas-foam.com/store/cakedummies.html

but they do require a minimum US$10.00 order.

wow, thanks everyone for your suggestions. I am going to look at joint compound (I think you mean wall mud for cracks)? I also like using homemade fondant...much cheaper. Would Royal Icing harden?

I buy all my cake dummies at Bulk Barn in Canada. I usually use them to lay my figurines on to dry.

Thanks for all the inputs...

its kinda hard to find plain marshmallow here in my country... as its one of the ingredient for homemade fondant right?

hmm i think i will be trying to use that joint compound or alike today~

thought of clay but its kinda expensive

There are other recipes that do not use marshmallows, but use gelatin instead.

Look up Michele Foster's Fondant recipe. icon_smile.gif
