Have a transformers cake due this weekend, and I made the bumblebee character, put him on skewers, and he is drying on a styrofoam block right now with wax paper supporting him in the upright position. I am not confindent he will stand in the cake, he is VERY heavy and about 4-5 inches tall. What additional support can I use? I already made him and he has been drying for 1 day so im not so sure what to do? Any suggestions? Thank you!

Insert straws into the cake for the skewers to go into? The walls of the straws may provide enough counter-support.

I made a cake with a karate guy standing up several months ago and had the same problem. I had a dowel rod going through him and had the rod stuck in a wad of fondant while I was working on him.

Well when it came time to put him in the cake, there was nothing to hold the rod upright with the weight of the figure. I ended up putting a wad of fondant in a small/wide styrofoam cup (like a small soup cup), cutting the size of the cup out of the cake and inserting the whole cup (cup is upside down filled with fondant), and covering it with frosting.

It worked. I will put the cake in my pics, so you can better see what I mean.

Soooo this cake is due tomorrow at 10:00 AM and I decided to put the dowels through a 6 inch fondant covered cake board and straws to hold the dowels in the cake, I feel he is supported well, but NOW all of a sudden his left leg is giving and he is now leaning, I am praying he makes it through the night. I have had him drying for 5 days now. It is almost like his left leg didnt dry and the weight is squishing it. I have him being supported to dry more in the right position over night and I just pray that he makes it. im a nervous wreck there is no way I can redo him in time... icon_cry.gif

is the figurine made just out of fondant or gum paste? if so next time you may try using foil for the basic shape of the figure, then cover the foil in gum paste or fondant and allow to dry. Check out my jungle cake i made the figurines with non-toxic clay but the idea is still the same.

it is made out of 50/50 mix because I didnt have enough gumpaste... which is my fault.. I never thought to cover foil .... Great Job on your cake!!
