I was just curious as to how some people price cupcakes. I figured you would do it by the dozen but I'm not sure how much I should do! Any suggestions?

In Minnesota I get $18 for a dozen regular cupcakes, $22 for filled regular cupcakes. I sell mini's
by the 2 dozen for $18. I have never had anyone complain on price. Hope this helps!

Personally to me cupcakes should come in the 2 dozens, unless you have a recipes that only makes 1 dozen.

I'd price it the same as I would a serving of cake, if it is filled and has been decorated. If it isn't filled and just has a swirl of icing I'd go slightly less.

Cupcakes are considerably less labor than cakes, especially if they just have a basic swirl. We price by the dozen (starting at $30/dozen), but we are in California, which requires a licensed and inspected commercial kitchen if you want to legally sell food. We start at $44 for an 8" cake (about 12 servings).

I stopped in a local cakes place last week and was really surprised to see her cupcake prices. My guess is that her main business is wedding/party cakes, and they bake the cupcakes out of the leftover batter. Not sure of course, but they had numerous boxes of cupcake six-packs in the counter, and the prices were scary cheap. We live in a major tourist town on the coast, and the surrounding small towns are rural, so there's not a lot of competition here because of tourists don't use it, business is slow. We have no actual cupcake shop in the main city at all.

Anyway, back to my point, her prices. She was selling them by the half-dozen, for $6 for a basic cupcake, $7 for filled, and $8 for gourmet. Who could compete with that? They looked tasty, but they weren't decorated very extravagantly so I didn't take any home -- too many others still sitting here from recent experimentation.

Normal orders on a daily basis are sold at a minimum order of 2doz per flavor. Basic Flavors are $48($2each) . Gourmet flavors are $67.20($2.80 each). We get requests for a dozen sometimes less like 9, but we can afford to use our big oven and use up electricity for a small order..No way! Need to think of electricity or gas.

The only time we sell less and assorted is when we sell at the local market.

What is a 'normal' charge if you're selling them individually?

I charge $52.00 per 2 dz. (minimum order) one flavor cupcake with basic swirl

I charge $18/dozen for standard and $24/dozen for specialty. i have a 1 dozen min order but i rarely get people wanting only a dozen. if i do get someone who only wants a dozen of a flavor i rarely make and therefor don't have on hand or would have to make a special trip for ingredients then i just say i'm booked.

I charge $3.00 each for basic swirled BC ontop...anything more with fondant flowers etc..$3.50 and up.

Last year I had orders coming out of my ears.. I was only charging $3 per cupcake, with a minimum order of 1 dozen. $36.00 for a dozen decorated cupcakes is a bargain here.. and I got so many orders that I had to take a break. I was doing so much work and not making hardly any profit.

So now I've started again (about 3 weeks ago) and I put my prices up to $3.75 per cupcake. I've changed my recipe and use 100% homemade fruit purees etc instead of bottled flavourings, so I feel it's definitely worth it. This also gives me more room (and time as my orders aren't overflowing) to be creative with the decorating, without feeling annoyed about it. The orders have slowed but I'm still getting orders at this price so I'm happy. I'm only a hobby baker though and because this is a part time activity for me I don't want to turn my oven on unless I have a good reason to.
I also feel comfortable at this price because the pricey cake shop down the road sells their cupcakes for $3.50 each, and they're just plain vanilla or chocolate with some lollies/candies on top.
