My daughter is having a Monster Mania theme for her birthday party and I want to make the top tier of her cake resemble the cake on the plates, with green slime around the top and dripping down the sides. Any ideas for a translucent green slime that tastes good? I keep finding recipes that involve cornstarch or Metamucil. I am thinking about just using piping gel but didn't know how that would taste in such a large amount. The middle tier is also going to be a monster head so I need something that is thick enough that it won't run all over the middle tier. I also thought about using melted caramels but thought it might be too sticky. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
May not be exactly what you have in mind, but I would probably tint RI and make it look like it's dripping and splattering all over your cake. You can make it neon green instead of translucent green ... but that's just me .
DC Cupcakes did it for halloween. She melted marshmallows, tinted them, and used them as a filling in cupcakes. It didn't come back to solid form.
On my ghost buster cake, I used a little green gel squirted on then spread out for the slime look. For the filling in the cupcakes, I made lemon curd and colored it green, so when you bit into the cupcake, you had some green goo.
So when I read your post the first thing that came to mind was maybe some lemon or lime curd.
Following the marshmallow idea above, something like these may work as well...

You mentioned not wanting to use cornstarch but, I think a strawberry glaze would be the perfect look and texture. Just add blue color to make it green.
I think piping gel with a little white and green coloring would work...you would just need to make sure not to put too much as it'll drip down everything else too...maybe that would work though
I would use piping gel tinted green. Below is a recipe that JanH posted here on cc that is super easy to make. The lemon juice gives it a nice lemon taste.
Piping Gel That Works
Ingredients
1/3 cup sugar
1 Tbsp. cornstarch (cornflour)
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup water
Instructions
Whisk sugar and cornstarch (cornflour) in a small saucepan.
Gradually add juice and then the water. Make sure there are no lumps.
Stir over medium/high heat until mixture boils and thickens.
Color as desired.
Will last about a month or so in the fridge
You may want to PM augurey because she has a Ghostbusters cake in her photos that has the slime you are talking about. I'm sure she will tell you how she did it.
