I've been playing with fondant for a while and have only made one fondant cake that was OK and have been struggling to make a half way decent rose. If it takes me as long to get it down as it did for me to master the buttercream rose, I will be retired before I'm any good at them! lol
So yesterday after a frustrating day at the bakery, I pulled out my fondant and started playing with it, trying to sculpt faces, and try once more to make a rose.
After an entire hour of making tiny petals, struggling against the humidity, and scouring various tutorials on the web, I happened across a video on youtube that BLEW. MY. MIND.
Now, I did exactly as she did and the rose came out good, but it was...smaller than I wanted...so I cut out fifteen round pieces and it made the most beautiful rose I have ever made.
I spent a good fifteen minutes gushing over the rose, thinking OH GOD NOW I MUST MAKE A CAKE COVERED IN FONDANT ROSES!!!!!
I wanted to share the video with you all in case there is anyone out there who struggles with roses too.
And also, she has some other very nice tutorials as well.
That's better known as the "Duff Rose". He's been doing it on Ace of Cakes for years. Glad you were able to finally make a rose.
I love this from the comments:

poster 2: "Now I want a pepperoni rose!"

Ah, really? Oh well, it's still an awesome technique. LOL
Glad you were able to find a technique that worked for you. I love when I finally accomplish something and can sit and admire the results.
Wow! That looks like it will save so much time from the other ways I've tried. Can't wait to try it out.
Brilliant!!
I wonder if it's actually as easy as she makes it look? I'll have a quick play later and let you know!

bwhahahhahaha Thats a funny comment!! I didn't even read them
Has anyone watched the one where the guy makes the roses w/ out using cutters??? It's by far one of the neatest videos I've seen.
That's wonderful! I love watching her tutorials. I just discovered her as well.
Oh, on one of those multi-tier stands of round acrylic plates, a pizza on each!
Ooops. Quoted the wrong post. Should have been
"Pepperoni roses - sounds very cool to me. How about a wedding pizza?"
(pizzas on wedding tier stand)
Pepperoni roses.... yum.
How cute on little pizzas. My family is going to think I lost my mind on pizza night.
Dang now I'm hungry.
Thanks for sharing the link. I am now subscribed to her tutorials on YouTube. I'm taking a class at her shop on Saturday -- it is "Extreme Cookies and Cupcakes." But ... now I'm craving pizza. ha ha!
Brilliant!!

I've actually taken several classes from Kathy at Sweet Wise and I took one where she taught us how to make the roses, and yes, they are that easy to make. I have some on a cupcake in my pictures. I love Kathy and all of the classes that they offer. They also have an online store and they sell The Mat there which is also amazing!

I want to know what they do with the big gob of gumpaste on the bottom of the rose. They make it look easy and they are so beautiful but what of the gob....
They probably pinch it off or I guess you could leave it on if you wanted that rose to be a center and others surruonding it. It would lend height to the center.
I just made 40 of those little Duff roses by cutting 20 in half. I'm using them as a border on my DDs birthday cake. I like more realistic roses but these will match the style of the cake.
