Ok, mom made a Van Gogh, "Starry Night" cake once. She is passed away and my sister in law would like me to duplicate this cake for my brother's 40th Birthday. The catch is I have no clue what technique she used to do it. I attached a picture of the original cake. Any idea's on how to duplicate this?.....

You can paint this with buttercream. Look in the first Hello Cupcake! book - pages 39-41.

@Megpi, I found your cake on accident a couple months ago and fell in love with it. Then when I saw this question I couldn't remember where I saw it so I searched forevericon_smile.gif. It's wonderful!

Megpi thats beautiful! It looks very similar to her's. I plan to start by tracing/impressing the main lines of the picture on crusted buttercream and I'm not sure where I'm going from there. The thing that amazes me about her's is that you can't see any pipe lines. I don't know how she blended her colors and still kept her detail. I really wish I knew what tools she used to apply her icing. If I had that book I would look it up but I don't and I don't think I'm going to have time to go get it before Fri. : (

I'm assuming you mean the Hello, cupcake book?
Using the tip of a round toothpick, score an outline of the painting on top of the cupcakes( or cake). Pipe outlines of the main subject areas with the appropriate frosting color, such as creamy yellow for the stars, royal blue for the horizon line, dark green for the trees, greenish brown for the grass. Starting from one of the top corners of the cake canvas, pipe frosting following the scored outline, blending colors as you go (see note below) to achieve desired affect. Continue working your way across the top of the painting, then work your way down to cover the cupcakes completely.
*To blend colors, have bags filled with desired colors ready. Start piping design in one color. Add the second color on top of or next to the first color. Use the tip of the bag to blend the two together. continue with remaining colors, overlapping and mixing them as you go.
(copied from Hello, cupcake! by Karen Tack and Alan Richardson)
Hope that helpsicon_wink.gif link below to what theirs looks like

That's pretty cool, I still wish I knew how she did this one. Oh well it's not going to make itself. I'd better get busy and see what I can come up with. Thanks for the tips everyone, let me know if anyone comes up with any more ideas. I'll post a pic when its finished. Hopefully I can do my mom's artwork justice. I don't think I can compare to the original artist. : )
