I have done a camo cake in the past in buttercream, I mixed up several of the camo colors and randomingly piped the on the cake with large tip, then let it set just a few mins, and smoothed them out/together with Viva paper towel and fondant smoother, I've never done it in fondant. But I hope the buttercream tip helps.

I have done both - I did buttercream just as Jody130 did and fondant. I like the fondant look better. Same way made different shades and twisted them together abit and then rolled them out and cut out sections as need. If you look in my pics you can see both styles. Good Luck
