Does anyone know how to make metallic gold buttercream icing? I need to figure it out for a 50th wedding anniversary cake. Thanks for any help icon_smile.gif

The only way I could get it to work was to refrigerate the cake then paint it with gold luster dust thinned out with vodka. Keep putting it in the fridge to firm it up if you need to.

You could use gold leaf if you want to go crazy with it.

It will never look like it would look on fondant, though. You might want to do a white cake with gold accents, either in buttercream or fondant.

I have heard of someone spraying it with Luster spray after it is iced and crusted. I believe she used the kind made by PME. I personally have never tried it, but i saw one last week sprayed silver. It looked great!

Ive never done a whole cake but I did make metallic gold cookies. I made the frosting gold colored and then sprayed it with PME gold Lustre spray. The gold turned out nice, I wish I had a photo.

That's just gold spray on rough icing.

To get that much of a gold color you have to use a buttload of luster dust or spray, though, so watch out.

Americolor has a metalic gold airbrush spray. I am not sure if you have an airbrush, but if so that would be the way to go. You can get a 9 oz bottle of it for around $16 including shipping.
