As you know, the Texas Cottage Law will start on September 1. To those of you who've been selling baked goods from your home long before this bill was passed, what do you have to do now to make yourself 'official'? Do you already have a DBA? What about insurance? Are those things you had prior to the bill?

I am getting ready to open shop from my home starting in September, but I need to know what steps to take to make myself 'legal' and official'.

Any guidance would be so appreciated! I know there are other threads on this, but I am confused by the legal stuff. judge.gif

I'm in the same boat. I just read today about the Texas Cottage Law being passed. Kinda curious if anyone knows anything more about it yet. What steps do i have to take in order to bake legally out of my house?

The basics to check are: writing a business plan, zoning and business licensing with your city, get a tax ID number, filing for a business name, getting liability insurance, and getting your accounting squared away (whether you do it yourself with QuickBooks or hire an accountant).
