Just For Fun Bakers Addicted To All The Tools And Equipment!

I can't be the only one who bakes just for fun who is addicted to buying all the fun little tools! I just bought 50 cake push pop containers which let me tell you will just THRILL my hubby! I think that is the craziest must have just because purchase to date. What is yours all you just for fun no profit making baking cakers?!!
My list is pretty much endless, but my biggest splurge was my cricut which is never touched :'(
I just HAD to but the Babycakes Cake Pop maker when Kohl's had them on sale AND I had a $10.00 off coupon. I've only used it a couple of times but it IS pretty nifty.
A few years ago, after I took the Wilton classes, Michael's and their coupons were my best friends! I accumulated a bunch of stuff to feed my addiction.
I hear you! I just started making cakes for my family (mostly kids) and of course need different tools for every cake. Can I do without? Sure, but I have convinced myself that it'll take twice as long and I just have to get all new toys. Haven't splurged on the Scott Clark Wolley DVDs and cutters/veiners, but I probably will. Also have my eye on the Agbay. Completely unnecessary when I only bake once a month or
so.
I have been buying "tools" since forever....I have to now retain myself and ask if I really need it...do I have a place to put it. I think as your talent grown, styles change and interests change..you buy what you need or think you need.
The saying "There is always room for jello".....Well.."There is always room for a new tool"....lol

Yup...me too!! Brand new in the box for over a year!! Maybe one day I'll get the courage to open it up.
Wow, my cricut is my big splurge and I used it the day I got it and all the time since.. I love how simple and easy it makes cutting specific designs since I have no artistic talent.. probably my favorite thing I have cut with it is the Superman logo, Batman logo and toy story characters. I also have terrible piped writing so it is a godsend for that. I have used it on many of my cakes.
The trick has been for me to use mostly gumpaste and freeze it for a few minutes before cutting.

Very nice luckylibra...maybe I should just bite the bullet and open up that cricut box! Do you use it with SCAL or any other program or just the cartridges?
Let me see.... I have the Cricut, Edible image printing system, Air Brush & Compresser, Cake Stacker and all kinds of videos, tools and molds. When I go to visit my daughter I have to stop by the Cake Art store and the Nicolas Lodge Sugar Art store before I get there. Those are my "Toys are us" My next purchase is the Agaby. I have a small fortune in toys !!!!!!!!!!

I have SCAL but used the demo on MTC to do the batman and superman.. just hit stop before it did the final cut through the piece.. [/i]
And I have a friend who has tons of cartridges so she shares with me so I don't have to buy them all.
Oh, the tools...I don't have the bigggies (read pricey), like cricut, or an air brush or an agbay, and none of those are even really on my wish list. But I have pans, and cutters, and dusts and veiners and so many little tools and gadgets. It's really a good thing that the nearest good cake supply store is over an hour away from me and I dislike internet shopping. My 2 biggest weaknesses are cake stands and books. I think I'm up to about 20 books, including 5 or 6 Wilton yearbooks and a couple of "antiques" I've found at thrift stores. I put myself on cake stand restriction until I find a perfect footed square or a milk glass one. It's been tough but I did win one last night on a blog giveaway .
Edible image system from Icing Images, air brush from Ebay (what a bargain, love it), Magic Line square pans, many books and dvds, some still yet to come. I took a class with Becky Rink in the spring and just enrolled in four more with other well known cake artists toward the end of August. They're not a 'tool' but lots of fun. I'm mostly a hobby baker. I haven't splurged on agbay yet, but I can tell it's in my future. I went looking for the cricut when lots of posts were here about it being reduced but, haven't found one yet. Love cake tools and love to learn about them as well as learn new techniques.
I love to collect cake pans and dessert cookbooks. I've completely filled up the cake pan pantry my husband built me. Time for a new addition.
I think my biggest splurge is the Agbay - love it by the way. I am also accumulating a lot of cutters, molds, dusts, etc. If I ever realize my dream of opening a home business, it will all come in handy. In the meantime, I have fun practicing with everything.

My words exactly!

Maybe you could help me out here. What exactly are SCAL and MTC? Maybe they are something I should look into? Would I be more likely to use my cricut if I had them? I really hate that I've invested all that money on it and that I never use it TAI
I have a closet for all my toys! Love them all, but one of my favorites is my clay extruder. I've been thinking about an air brush, but not sure how often I'd use it.
I don't have any of the big, expensive ones but the only one that I would like to try is the Cricut. Right now, I'm addicted to gum paste flowers so cutters are my obsession. Thank goodness they don't take up too much room!
I've been buying all the usual: tons of tips, rollers, flower cutters, pans, mats, etc, etc. Two days ago I got the Cricut Cake, and I can't wait to play with it. About 6 months ago I bought an airbrush, with lots of 'ink' (food coloring) for it, but it's never been taken out of the box. I'm afraid of it, I think. I really want an Agbay, but haven't bought it yet. I imagine it's in my future, though.
I'm actually being wise (not that ya'll aren't but my hubby has me on a sad sad budget .. darn you dave ramsey!) and taking the advise of CC and just buying as I need. I did go to Michaels the other day and found some stuff on clearance like cute cupcake liners for .25 and today I did go to a community garage sale and found a freakin' turntable for $5!!!!!!!!! My hubby was going to make one for me but I found this one! Can't wait to use it tomorrow.
I've just recently realized just how many cake pans I have. I don't even remember making some of those sizes.
I did go to a community garage sale and found a freakin' turntable for $5!!!!!!!!!
I went to a garage sale on Friday. The Craigslist ad said, "tons of cake decorating and candy making items". I filled up two bags of stuff for $12 including mini egg shaped pans, an open book pan, loads of candy molds, and even unopened packages of floral wire and floral tape for gum paste flowers. And then she posted an ad on Saturday telling me to come back and get a stack of about 20 Wilton books for $5. I have to pick them up today!
My cake nook is overran with slightly used cake toys (cricut cake, Babycakes cake pop machine, air brush with colors.) I have a friend who has promised to come take the unused shoes still in boxes if something happens to me. (I wear a size 11 so when I find a good deal or a shoe that I like - I buy extras and keep them for when I need them - there is whole story about that.)
Anyway, now I need a cake buddy who can come take my cake toys if something happens to me. I am single - so no husband to tell me "no." I am going to ICES in August so I am sure I will come home with more toys that I just have to have!!
By the way, I plan to have a garage sale sometime this summer and get rid of some extra cake stuff that I don't think I will use. Of course, the minute I sell it, I will need it!! (LOL)
I wish we had a board on this site where we could sell our unwanted cake items. It would be nice to sell to our CC friends and to have one central location to go to for finding items we needed. I am currently in the process of moving to a smaller home, so I really must downsize (which means no new toys for me until I can find somewhere to put them )
I also have a cricut cake and just bought and airbrush. I never used the cricut cake for cake, but rather projects for my girls. I just bought an airbrush. Scared to take it out of the box. I can hear DH, "What's that for? You gonna make air brushed shirts now?"
I also have an allowance for "cake". Okay, so it's actually my personal allowance for everything---clothes, etc., but I always spend it on cake supplies! I kept trying to sneak it in other places in the budget and we kept going over! So for now, I get $XX a month, although hubby and I talked about downsizing. I wish we had more money so I could buy more toys and make more elaborate cakes!
I absolutely LOVE my Cricut! I think I go to Michaels, Hobby Lobby and Joanns on a weekly basis to see if there's anything new put out or added to Clearance. I'm not saying that I buy stuff every week, but I am constantly looking! And I work at a shop where we do cakes as well as sell supplies, so that's an ongoing thing as well.
I do plan on having my own place in the (hopefully near) future, so it's all an investment that will pay off later. The more I have now, the less I have to buy later. I'm always reorganizing to make my space more efficient, so DH doesn't complain about it. And when I'm teetering on whether or not to buy something, he gives me the push to go for it. (I'm lucky that I have his support 100%)
I think my next purchase is going to be an Airbrush. I'm eye-balling the Duff one at Michaels, 40% coupon!!
I have a tight budget so I can only buy small items or it really shows up on the bank statements. I am glad to see that there are also other craigslist and garage sale'ers on here! I was too embarassed to mention that I'm constantly checking out craigslist to see if there are any cake decorating supplies available. I don't like driving downtown Atlanta but if there is a cake supply being offered in the state of Georgia, I am in the car like Mario Andretti. My husband keeps deleting the Hobby Lobby coupons hoping I will forget about may weekly treks to purchase something I don't need - like we really needed every shed tool we own - but I digress.
Since I am only a hobby baker and extremely un-artistic, I have enjoyed the new Wilton silicon molds. Everytime someone requests a cake, I'm constantly trying to sway them to something that will need the use of the new molds!
Restraint is now my middle name....or maybe its bankruptcy that is my middle name!
I'm a huge fan of buying gumpaste/fondant tools... cutters, embossers, etc. I really want to expand my pan selection, but the demand for odder sizes is not high amongst my engaged friends (most just want round or square cakes).
I also buy lots of discounted stuff at my local cake store. Styrofoam pieces, sprinkles, etc. Whatever my budget will allow!
