Dry powdery look on my gum paste pieces??

Hi All

I'm new here. I cut out some Hello Kitty pieces for a cake for this weekend and left them to dry. They are now ready to be used but the still look like they have corn starch on them. Any suggestions as to how I can make them look bright and shiny again?

Also, any suggestions on smoothing the edges? Nail file or fine sandpaper?

pass them quickly through some steam. That'll bring right back to life and keep them there. Not too much though, or they'll wilt/melt.

To get rid of the powder you can either steam them or use edible varnish. For the edges, I would use the fine sandpaper. Just make sure to take a barely damp paper towel over them when you are done to remove any dust residue.

Just brush on some shortening and they will be nice and shiny again.

I have used steam, shortning and liquid sugar. I find steam the best. I have a travel clothes steam, from Target and it works perfectly!

'Washing' them with a paint brush dipped in vodka or lemon extract will take off any powdery substance if that's all you want to do. It dries very quickly.
