I am very interested in getting a cricut machine but I was interested in knowing from people who use them... are they worth the money? Have you had issues with them? can you use standard Hobby lobby, Michaels, coupons to purchase them? Thanks!
I have really liked my cricut. It takes a little practice to get it right but has worked very well for me.
Unfortunately none of the coupons for michaels or hobby lobby ect will work on any cricut products. Not the machines, cartidges or mats, so if you're looking for a good price you'll have to keep and eye out for when it goes on sale.
I have the Cricut, but I really like my Silhouette. The print and cut feature is great, and you do not use expensive cartridges, you use your computer to make your own designs.
I have a cricut and a silhouette and prefer the silhouette for the same reasons as bonniekaye as well as being able to use Make The cut software to cut any image you want.
So bummed on HSN they just had a special on the Cricut cake (Martha Stewarts version) and it was 199.99. Just went back on to check it out today and It was no longer available
Can anyone tell me what a Silhouette is? is that the brand? What do most of you use the cricut for..lettering??
TIA
I am so disappointed. I bought the cricut expression in hopes of using it with MTC. I've had the machine for a little over a year now but I moved from one state the another and had it stored away. I just found out that MTC and SCAL no longer support the Cricut!!!! So now it is just a very expensive paper weight in the back of my closet!
I am thinking of purchasing a Silhouette but I am scared to spend the money without knowing if this other machine is worth it.
If you are un sure if you want to invest in a Silhouette you need to visit Linda McClures web site. ( www. deseretdesigns .com ) Check out the cakes she has made using the Silhouette, pay attention to the cakes that used the print and cut feature. I have a Cricut, but I do not use it any more. I can do all my work with the Silhouette and I use Make the Cut for my designs. The customer support has been great. I know others are trying to promote other machines that do the same thing. I see PhotoFrost is coming out with an electronic cutter to cut their icing sheets. I don't know what their machine will sell for, but in the world of electronic cutters, the Silhouette see,s to be the least expensive. The folks on the Make the Cut forum really like the Silhouette for its print and cut ability. They say the software that comes with the Silhouette is excellent, and I agree. You can't go wrong with the Silhouette and you will get the help you need to get successful cuts.
You can still use SCAL with your Cricut. Just don't update the firmware and you'll be fine.
So does the Sillouhette just do frosting sheets or can you use it with gumpaste and fondant as well?

But can you still purchase SCAL anywhere? I also waited around and didn't purchase it before the problem with cricut and the cartridges just aren't worth the money. I still use my cricut with the cake basics cartridge, but for other things I'm still using stencils and my x-acto knife.
I don't bellieve the SCAL program that works with Cricut is available anymore. All the websites I checked only have version 3 and it will not work with Cricut.

It occurred to me that cricut should come out with their own software....this would cut into their cartridge business, but I imagine that people would be more likely to spend $80-$100 on software that lets you cut anything than wasting money on something as limited as a cartridge.
I really need to get SCAL or Fairy Cut, would you pm me if you have any info as to where I can get either of these? Can't find either that will be compatible with the "C" machines
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide

The Silhouette does an amazing job cutting gum paste. It is because of the modifird blade that comes with the Silhouette cake package. It will also cut frosting sheets, but I think fondant is too soft to cut with any machine.
I've had cricut cake for over a year now and rarely use it because it is to time consuming to get the fondant or gumpaste "just right" or it will not cut correctly. I do roll mine then freeze if as long as I can and then it cuts a good deal better. I got mine at a very good cost because Micheal's accidently posted the wrong price on it and they honored it so I got it.
