A client has asked if I would give her 14-year-old daughter lessons. I'd love to, but not I'm sure how much to charge and where I should do it. I don't really want to do it at my house because I have 3 young boys and they are very distracting . Any advice?

When I give private lessons I often do so at the student's home. If that isn't a possibility, get a babysitter for your boys.

What does the mom expect- 1 day a week for 4-5 consecutive weeks like a normal class? Or would a 1 or 2 days for several hours work better for both of you?

I would suggest charging at least $10-12 per hour - or whatever would cover the cost of babysitting, plus some.

Classes include a lot of prep time beforehand as well, we charge $60/hour for private baking lessons (although our target market is adults, not kids).

I charge by the class, but Jason is right, a LOT of prep is required, and if it's a private class, it's still the same amount of prep and time for just one student. I basically charge the rate I do for a normal class times my minimum student quota. For example, a $35 class for 3 hours with a 5 student minimum would be $175 for a private class, of course, it might not be 3 hours, but it could be more time depending on the student.

My fee is $50/hr. This includes basic ingredients, like eggs, flour, sugar, but all premium ingredients are separate.

My license allows people in the bakery. Make sure this is covered if you use your kitchen.
