I work from home so I cant help with knowing too much about the smell but I'd call the maker of your freezer and ask them. If it was new did you clean it before using it? sometimes a new anything will have a smell till its washed.

Wow,I have no idea, how about halving a lemon and placing them in the fridge at least your buttercream will smell like lemons. I normally do this just to get rid of strong odours.

hmmm...if you only store cakes in the fridge, the fridge smell should only be of...cakes. Maybe something spilled? If it smells "off", I would remove everything at closing time and wash it out well with a baking soda/water mixture or lemon as mentioned above. Then, leave an open bowl or container with vanilla extract in it. (Vanilla extract even absorbs the smell of smoke!)

put some boxes of baking soda in there to help absorb odors.

There is a disinfectant Lysol like cleaner called Od0-Ban (odoban.com) - I get mine at Sams. Give that a shot, works well for any stubborn smells I have had in the past. Its a wonderful multipurpose solution.

The big question here is, what was the case used for previously?

Are you displaying your cakes with or without a container?

A couple of odor tricks from my old tupperware days- wad up newspaper, and seal inside for 24 hours. Another is to place briquets of charcoal inside to absorb the odor.

I know what you are talking about. It's definitely a 'freezer' smell...not bad...just kinda funky like something that's been frozen a long time. My question to you is, have you tasted your bc after it's come to room temp? Because it may not have the taste you think it will.

I once had a frozen cupcake (with frosting) that had been in the freezer for a couple of months...uncovered. It was hidden in the back. Anyway, I took it out with the intention of throwing it away, but got distracted and left it on the counter. A few hours later, I saw it sitting there and what had looked like a really freezer burned cupcake with 'freezer smell' looked fresh. I sniffed it and took a little taste, and to my surprise it didn't have any of that scent it had when I took it out and it tasted like fresh buttercream. (I use real butter). Even the cake was soft. Maybe your freezer scent is just a temporary thing that disappears when it comes to room temp.

I'd keep trying to get rid of it, but if you can't, it may not be the problem you think it is now.
