Improvements for reporting posts/Contact Mods button

Suggestion: add a Contact Moderators button to each post, possibly replacing the Report as Bad Post button. The Contact Moderators button would allow the user to report a post for a specific reason (the user could explain why) or just request clarification from the mods on an issue related to the thread or post without implicitly requesting removal or a post or locking of a thread.

This is the way it has worked on most other forums I have participated in, and it seems to be more flexible than the single option for reporting a bad post.

Also, there should be a way of reporting the first post of a thread (for example, a new spam thread that has no replies).

I wonder how often you must be reporting posts to even notice this. icon_confused.gif

There have been several times when I've noticed a spam thread in one of the forums, but it was impossible to report it until someone posted a reply, which bumped the thread to the top of the forum. Seems counter-intuitive to me.

I don't report individual posts too often, but when someone spams a thread or posts a personal attack I will usually click the report button in the hopes of averting a flame war. Unfortunately the mods usually don't respond until several hours later, and by that time the flame war has already happened and the thread is locked.

Perhaps you should just sign up to be a mod, Jason? Then you have the power to kill threads at your disposal. I think you'd make an excellent mod, for real! icon_smile.gif

Alternatively, you could allow yourself to succumb to the overwhelming urge to offer advice and respond to those OP spammers by chastising them (thereby providing a first response to activate the 'report' button), and then use the (now active) 'bad post' button to report them.

That's exactly what I do now...if there are no replies to the OP of a spam thread I just reply saying the OP is spam and not to click on the link, then I click the report button. Unfortunately this pushes the thread to the top of the forum and gains the spammer even more visibility until the thread is removed.

If I were a mod there would probably be a lot fewer threads locked or deleted since I would be more proactive about removing individual posts to head off flame wars...I've moderated forums before, and once people realize that their attack posts will be dealt with quickly they usually either shape up or move to another forum that is more tolerant of personal attacks.

A mod simply reminding people to stay on topic by posting in a thread is usually enough to salvage the thread, as long as the reminder is timely.

That's funny? I visit quite a few forums, and I don't think I can recall ever seeing a "contact moderators button".
I do see Report as Bad Post, or Report this post, all the time..

Just my humble opinion here, but Report as Bad Post on CC, seems to be working just fine. I know it does for me..

Every post has a "report bad post" button so even the first post in a thread can be reported. icon_smile.gif

However, that button disappears once any member has reported that specific post - so the mods aren't flooded with numerous reports on the same post. (So if you come across a questionable post that's missing the "report bad post button" - it means the post has already been reported.)

Additionally, Jackie & Heath never intended CC members to be glued to the homepage waiting for the limited number of currently displayed topics to change.

Rather, registered CC members can go to "forums" and use the "view posts since last visit" tab and select from the hundreds of topics which have been made since their last visit - not just since their current sign-on!

In fact, Jackie is going to add a link to "view posts since last visit" to the homepage as an update in the future.

Got it, that makes sense. From a usability perspective it might be beneficial to replace the button with a notice saying the thread has already been reported on all posts in the thread, since you probably end up getting multiple reports anyway when people click the report button on followup posts.

Interesting, I had no idea that feature existed! That's much easier than manually clicking each forum to check for new posts.

It would be even better if this list could be categorized by forum and filtered to show only specific forums you were interested in. You might even want to display this list directly at the top of the main forums page (perhaps within a widget that's collapsed by default so it doesn't take up too much room).
