HI! I have a small business making cake pushpops, cupcakes, edible favors, and buckeyes. Completely out of the blue after a routine eye exam, I was diagnosed with pseudotumor cerebri, a condition that acts like a tumor but isn't one. It's considered a benign condition, but can be unpredictable because it can cause massive cranial pressure/headaches and loss of vision. I'm thinking we caught mine early because I've only had the pressure and one blind spot in each eye.
I've had to cancel on four brides for July because of this. I don't feel too bad because of the condition, but I had a spinal tap that turned into four straight days of spinal headaches (painful!) and I had to spend lots of time in the hospital getting it treated. I'm on restricted activity for a few more days. I'll go back to my doctor in a couple of weeks to get another vision test and get on meds. He's not recommending surgery for now.
Due to the unpredictable nature of this condition, I'm afraid I might have to give up my business. It stinks, because I was just getting it off the ground. I know I could probably do the work, it's just that I'd hate to cancel on someone at the last minute because of nasty headaches/time for treatments.
I'm so anxious, I don't know what to do! What would you do in this situation? Am I worrying too much about what could happen?

I'm so sorry that this is happening to you, but so thankful they found it early. It does not necessarily mean you won't be able to return to your business.

If it were me, I'd put my health first and notify my customers that a serious health issue is going to prevent future orders - for an indefinite amount of time I would also tell them that I hope to be able to return after I receive a clean bill of health and thank them for their understanding. I would also let them know when I get my clean bill of health! (tell them you are so sorry for the inconvenience and you may possibly give a recommendation to another bakery)

Not everyone, (because there are some selfish people who think the world revolves around them) will be understanding - but you won't care about that. You care about yourself, your family and being well. God bless!

thanks! I've already posted on my site and facebook page that I won't be taking any orders until after the first of the year.
the condition, unfortunately, is not curable. it's just a matter of keeping it under control. I think I've read too much about it because it sounds like in alot of people it escalates, and I'm worried about that. too many "could happens" right now I guess.

if you have a cake friend or someone nearby that does cakes, you could get them to help fill current orders. I have lupus and so does one of my aunts, we both do cakes so far it has been to where when one of us has severe symptoms the other can fill in even though we live an hour apart, but we do have another caker friend who is on hand should we both be down. Take care yourself, figure out if certain things trigger your symptoms and then maybe you can be prepared when you start to feel them come on or avoid triggers,
