I've been thinking of getting a separate freezer for my cakes and wanted everyone's opinion on which type is good. Should I just get a freezer or a combo fridge and freezer? I'm also thinking that an upright freezer would be better than a chest. Thoughts?

a few years ago I bought a small chest freezer since it was cheaper than a fridge. i never use it! Then I told my dad to watch for a cheap used fridge for me, and just so happens my aunt was getting a new one and gave me her old one.
So I would recommend the fridge/ freezer combo. you will use the fridge way more than the freezer. At least if your like me, I refuse to freeze cakes - I think fresh is the only way to go. I do occasionally freeze frosting or fillings, etc. But the fridge will come in handy for when you need lots of eggs, sour cream, etc. and also when you run out of space to store your finished cakes, or half way finished cakes.
Hope that helps.

I love my upright freezer! Nothing goes into it but cakes, frostings, occasionally batter, and once in a great while, a bag of frozen veggies or bread.

I think it depends on what you use most now. I love to seal in moistness by zapping cakes in the freezer; a fridge just seems to dry things out even more in our arid climate. A large freezer is great for freezing buttercream, butter, cakes, fillings. But s fridge would be good for holding cakes about to be delivered.

If you go for a combo, I would think a top/bottom or a French door would be better than a side by side--those don't have room for larger cakes. Also look for removable or drop down shelves so you can get tall cakes in there. If it is just for cakes, you can probably forego the ice maker and water too to save you money and internal space.

I have a chest freezer at home and have to rearrange things (it is for home baking so its primary role is family food) to get cakes in there. The dividers make it hard to get large layers in. An upright would be much easier to store cakes.

I never use a fridge, but I have a chest freezer and an upright freezer. I by far prefer the upright, but I use the chest when I run out of room in the upright. Upright is way easier.

I mostly used the chest freezer for additional work space when busy holidays came - but my stand-up freezer with lots of shelving - and wide enough for commercial full-shet pans was a life-saver!
