When a carrot cake recipe calls for grated carrot, is there a difference from shredded? I want to use my food processor.

I've always understood shredded and grated to pretty much mean the same thing. If I'm doing a salad I'll pull out the box grater. If I'm doing enough to bake a carrot cake I pull out the food procesor. Time's too precious to be doing by hand what can just as easily be done a good deal faster by a machine. You go ahead and use your food processor.

I use my food processor to do carrots for carrot cake. I think, too, its a nicer texture than the strings of the shredded kind.

Shredded carrots are more like long strings while grated carrot is very fine small pieces. It also depends on the tools you use. the shredder blade of a food processor will create longer pieces and a microplane or cheese grater will make the smaller pieces. Personally I prefer the grated carrot but it is a lot more time and work to grate than it is to shred. HTH!

I just throw the carrots into the regular food processor and it grates them up into tiny pieces.

I used to always shreded my carrots with the food processor until I tried one of Martha Stewart's recipes that called for using the microplane. While it's more work, i must say the result was significantly better. Now if I'm making just a quick carrot cake for the family I use the food processor but for wedding cakes, or mini-cupcakes, I take the time with the micorplane. The downside of using the microplaned carrots on wedding cake and mini-cupcakes is that I had a ton of orders from guests at the wedding!...Oh my aching hands.

I do what Kita does. Grated, not shredded.

My processor does both. Cuisinart 16 c with three bowls, so I grate with the processor.
