Hi there! I have a 2 tiered cake- one tier is 6"and the other is 4". Do I have do dowel these cakes when I stack them, or should they be ok? Thank you!
It should be OK. But maybe one or two wooden dowels on the bottom would work, without taking away too much of the cake from the 6 inch.
I would dowel them yes...you don't want your work wasted by the top one pressing down onto the bottom.
If the cake and frosting were firm it'd be okay without dowels...for example if you did a traditional fruit cake covered in marzipan then fondant that would be fine.
I would dowel them...and you need four dowels at least to make it stable...think of the dowels as the table legs and the board of the upper tier as the table top. One table leg isn't going to hold up the table.
Are drinking straws ok to use as dowels? I don't have anything else on hand and all the stores are closed here in Canada for Canada day!
Straws are better than nothing. The only cake I've ever had fall during transport was held up with drinking straws, and I haven't used them since...but if you're not taking it anywhere, straws should be fine.

Ok-super! Thank you everyone for the advice! It's truely appreciated!
