Hey CCers its been a while since I've posted a question but I'm faced with a cake that I'm not sure what to do here....mom says baby HATES icing and doesn't want it on the smash Cakr. So what should I use instead of icing?

Any tips or thoughts are greatly appreciated as always!

Thanks and happy Caking icon_smile.gif

Some things come to mind: Sprinkle of powdered sugar? Maybe a cupcake with colorful sprinkles/jimmies? Strawberry or raspberry Jam? Fresh fruit? Fluff?

First I thought, that's the fun seeing the baby getting frosting all over them but, then I read the idea about the jam.

First BDs aren't fun without the mess.

I used pudding for a babies smash cake and she loved it. To firm it up I add unflavored gelatin and it became spreadable and held it's shape. I froze the cake and it made it to the party just fine. Mom kept it in the fridge until it was time to eat. The baby loved it and dug both her hands into the cake.

How the heck does the mom know that the "baby hates icing"? She's been feeding her infant frosting?! (I guess people do feed babies all sorts of strange and/or unhealthy things but ya know, I always thought that the first birthday cake was basically the ritual first introduction of sweets...)

The serious part of that question is, did the mom mean, not that the baby doesn't like the taste of icing but that the baby does not like to put his/her hands into sticky or mushy stuff? Because if that's the case, substituting pudding or jam or whatever isn't going to work. I'd go with powdered sugar instead, probably, and/or cocoa powder, or maybe something like a sugar-and-cinnamon streusel muffin topping -- and lots of it, so that it will fly around and make the traditional mess. icon_wink.gif

Kitagrl, coolwhip is on my list of maybes!

I was thinking of using 16oz container, adding a tsp. Vanilla and I've got some homemade strawberry filling left from the big cake and was thinking of mixing it with the cool whip. Has anyone ever tried this?

What about fillings that are similar to baby food fruits like the 3rd stages bananas or vanilla custard?? Maybe you can come up with pudding/custard like filling in a mom approved flavor or if the kiddo LIKES those jarred baby desserts maybe use some of that in a giant cup cake? Tough one!

icon_lol.gif Yeah, well, I wouldn't be so quick to conclude that baby hates icing. There are soooooo many reasons that one-year-olds throw food. icon_smile.gif

There's a little cake in my photos that is a tye dye cake. It's just a 6", one layer, no frosting cake but it is really cute and doesn't need frosting to be cute. You could do it in whatever colors the party theme is.

What about heavy whipping cream + a pudding packet? Whipped up until mediumish peaks? I bet that baby would love it. icon_smile.gif

I have made the tie dye cake in a mini bundt pan glazed it lightly with powdered sugar glaze and sprinkled multi colored jimmies on it and put a toy popping out of the center that is appropriate to the theme. very cute and no heavy icing.

Martha Stewart once had a cake on her website that was multiple layers, each baked in a different color. (It must have been a white or yellow cake with different colors added). Each layer was split, then stacked. It looked really cool.
