If you mean a 3D Thomas cake, I found the following link helpful..
http://thomasthetankenginecake.blogspot.com/

When I did my cake though I wanted to cover it with fondant, so I ganached it underneath instead of using buttercream so it was more sturdy. That worked well. One mistake I made though was not putting enough blue colour paste into the white fondant initially and by the time I got the right colour it was really overkneaded and dry. Anyway, not sure if that was what you were after but it may help. Good luck.

i used that one to make the face for my James cake. I used another for the cutting guide for the cakes to make the right shape, but I can't remember where I got it from. It went with the Thomas cake pieces that you can buy. I hope that makes sense.

I made one not long ago! You simply stack sections of cake on top of one another and cut the shape of the cylinder of the train. I then covered it with buttercream icing and made the face with easy roll white icing coloured grey.
Check it out in my blogs :

Hi there,

I just made a Thomas train cake. Are you looking to make the entire cake in the shape of Thomas, or just a small sugar figure? I did the latter as it was faster for me to model and place on a regular round cake. Carving a 3D cake takes me forever! You can check mine out at: http://cakecentral.com/gallery/2085093.

HTH!
