A bride sent me this picture (first one in my pics, not mine), wanting to do a display like this for her (of course, bigger) cake, with no cake balls. It makes me nervous. For those of you who have done something like this, how stable is it? I'd be lifting a 3-tier, 100 serving fondant cake on top of the platform. It would have to be absolutely level.

Of course the candles would be flameless but won't those look cheesy closeup?

Any thoughts? Would you do it?

I LOVE that idea! I think it would be gorgeous smaller with a cake on top. I would put something (block of wood/upside-down crate, whatever) the same height as the candle holders underneath where the cake will be for support, then it should be just fine. I'd love to get a report how this turns out. Unless I try it out first, then I'll let you know

maybe put little lighs in the glass blocks? you could even use the little tea lights (expensive) in the candle holders under the glass. Of course charge her for them but it would look like that and no need to worry about flames and fire.

I used this display for my daughter's wedding cake which was huge . you can see it in my photos .. it is the one with all the pink gp roses ... the only difference is i scattered the candles under the glass instead of arranging them all around the perimeter of the glass .. I puchased the glass at hobby lobby with the 40% coupon and i think it cost me about 20 bucks . I used the battery tea lights for the candle holders . the cake was 16...12...8.. and 6...like i said it was huge ...depending on the size of the tiers you may need help lifting it onto the glass. HTH

I do not think the votive candles look cheesy. I think they need to be flameless. If you had a flame, they might not burn due to the glass covering them. Also, if there was a small space between glass and flame, I'd be afraid the glass would get too hot and possibly crack and break the glass. (You probably didn't mean that, but that is how this volunteer firefighter, wife of cop/firechief thinks) Sorry

Any who...The weight in the photo display looks similar to what the weight would be of your cake.
I love the display. It totally rocks.

One small detail I noticed: There are votive candles in the center of the glass circle distributing the weight evenly. I think if you set it up this way, you should have no problem.

That's REALLY pretty. Thinking about how to incorporate it into a display for a wedding show . . .

Love the idea! I agree that real votives would be more classy, but they won't work.

1) You can't set the glass right on top of the candle holders, because real candles need oxygen to burn. No oxygen, no flame.

2) You could use something slightly higher to support the glass, leaving a gap above the candle holders for oxygen flow.... but then you will get smoke, and lots of it, all over the lovely clear glass.

Even if the battery candles are less than perfect, they are definitely the way to go

Those are flameless candles in the picture. They look great.

Definitely cut a support for the center where the cake will be. It should be the same height as the votives. However, you might want to cut it an eighth inch higherto give you some wiggle room.

Yes, it is a gorgeous display and yes I would definitely use flameless candles. Thanks guys, looks like you're comfortable with it! I'll post a photo of my setup when I'm done...
