Our town just got it's first Michael's and the grand opening is Saturday. The newspaper had 4- 50% off coupons so I bought 3 more newspapers. I'm going to get all I can at 50% off. So what are your must have items? I'm definately going to get the petal pan set, and a few bottles of vanilla but what else is a must have?

Tip 789!!! and the smaller version of this one. Featherweight bags, and a turntable. And if it were me going I would get duplicate tips of the ones I use the most. (3,4,5,104,103,4,670) mostly the writting tips, roses, basketweve ones. I hope this helps. The hexagon pan set wouldn't be a bad thing to have. I guess it depends on how much you already have. I would also make a wish list of what you want that you don't already have.

789 is the cake icer tip right? I am definately going to pick up one of those. I just want to make sure I take full advantage of the coupons! My wishlist is massive but Michael's only sells Wilton stuff so I have to get what they offer.

Yes. 789 is the icer tip. It saves so much time and frustration for me. You'll need the 16" featherwieght bag to go with it though. Just think of it this way, what you don't get on your wish list you can pass it on to your family for your christmas shopping list! icon_smile.gif

I have doubles of all of my tips now, do I need more? How many sets of tips does everyone else have? And thanks for the info about the coupons, I figured they would do that. I think I'll have to take my entire family with me so we can each buy that one item on my list! LOL!

The Michael's near my house is weird... it only lets you get one item per coupon and it only lets you use one coupon per day. icon_confused.gif I had to take my mom and my sister with me on both Satruday and Sunday to get full advantage of the six coupons I managed to find.
I got a turntable, Wilton Yearbook, cake icer tip, and some cakeboards (I used to cut my own and wrap them in aluminum foil, I got the ones with a gray lace pattern printed on them, saves me a lot of trouble icon_lol.gif .)

Which Michael's applies the coupon to the cheapest item? The ones I've been to it's automatically applied to the most expensive item. They are all pretty new though so they are all computerized. They just scan the coupon at the end and it figures it out for them. And, if they only let you use one, go to someone else's line the next time. Put your bag in the car and come back. They'll be too busy to recognize you from the other's line. What are they going to do, kick you out of the store?

One of the most popular new items is the rectangle cake carrier. On one side it has indentations for cupcakes and the other is flat for a cake. (They copied Tupperware.) If they have it, I'd use your coupon for it. It's up there in price and is hard to find! The other thing is the versitile pans as others have mentioned, but I'd add the sports ball pan, Animal Crackers (if you plan on making kids cakes) or the rectangles (1/2 & 1/4).

I don't know which Michael's does the coupons that way. I am going to buy two items at the same time tomorrow and see how they work. I've recruited my mother, two sisters, aunt and cousin and we've got about thirty coupons to use up over two days. There is another pottery store opening on the same day and my mother could spend three hours in there so we will take a 3hr break for pottery and lunch and then come back. Hopefully they'll be too busy to notice us! It's tomorrow so I'll let you know...

Can you still use the 50% off coupons this weekend? The coupon says that it was only valid last Sunday and Monday...

i had some coupons from this past weekend and wished i hadn't spent all my money on stuff at my local cake store so i could get 'big' items...
i would get:

- big 55 piece tip set/saver (if you're needing tips) (reg $45)
- toolbox thingy with all the tools in it 101 piece (reg $110?)
- decorator preferred 3-tier rounds (reg $35)
- if you do a lot of professional cakes, maybe the stands, which are all sold separately and are really expensive ($60?)
- i got a fondant 'set' this weekend which i am loving cause it has all this little stuff which wouldn't work normally unless you want to use up all your coupons - has dec. pref. rounded top pan, 3 sets of the cutters, rolling pin, and cutter/embosser all in one box and you can use one coupon to make cheap! (reg ~$24)
- 100 count disposable bags (reg $19.99)
- sports ball, mini sports ball, wonder mold, mini wonder mold, standup bear pan - all those pans that will help you make shaped cakes if you do that and can be used for tons of different stuff - not like character pans
- big pack of icing colors
- professional turntable (reg. $60??)

okay... i guess i should stop dreaming for you icon_wink.gif you can tell i spend hours staring at michael's and joanne's stuff haha

ps my joannes always asks me which item i want to use the coupon on so i always say the most expensive one. if you have a joannes don't forget they'll take michaels' coupons (hopefully these special ones too) so you don't feel soooo guilty about using more than one you can just go to the next store. that's what i do...hit up michaels then go to joannes, do the same thing next day icon_wink.gif

The coupons are for the grand opening which is tomorrow. One coupon is good only for Saturday at 50% off, one coupon is good for Sunday at 50% off and the other coupon is good Monday through Friday of the next week at 40% off. I've got plenty of all of them so I plan to shop today and tomorrow and for some of the cheaper things I will pick those up next week and just go each day.

Rainbow_Moon, what is the fondat set? I used the Wilton online store to get my wishlist but I didn't see this set. Is it available at Michael's or just JoAnne's? That is the set for me! It will save me on buying lots of little items.

I'd love to get that pro set with the toolbox but I have most of those items already. I'm trying to get stuff I use a lot or things I don't have. I've got tips stored everywhere so I thought about getting a tip saver case too!

the fondant set i got at michaels, i did not see it at joannes. it is def. packaged by wilton, but all they did was throw the (already packaged) stuff into a box. the box has a birthday cake (i think looks like a present?) on the front and the back shows all the tools. maybe if i feel industrius in the morning i can take a pic and post it for you...right now i am falling asleeep!!! the set was below the fondant tools and i didn't see it till i was there poking around for a while - it didn't jump out at me. it has the 'look' of all the wilton packaging.

if you don't have the toolbox and want to organize your tips that is pretty handy. i think it's about $20 just the box without any supplies.

I found the set you are talking about but I didn't get it today. Boy did I rack up. It was easier than I thought it would be. There were so many people in there it was crazy. Everyone had stacks of coupons and they allowed you to ring up each item at a time and use your coupon because people were buying one item and then hopping back in the back of the line before they even put their bags in the car. Too funny.

My mother, aunt and myself spent quite a bit of money. My aunt was buying stuff for the church she attends and my mother was helping me buy my stuff. We got tons of pans, parchment triangles, meringue powder, colors and flavorings and more.

I'm counting my pennies and making my list for tomorrow. Pillars and some cake stands are definately on my list. Thanks everyone for your suggestions!
