For the Viva Papertowel method, why does it have to be a Viva towel? Or would a different one work if you had the same texture?

If you want a pattern you can use any type of paper towel. Viva paper towels have no pattern so it has a smooth finish

If you don't mind having a patter/texture on your cake you can use any paper towel. Viva paper towel is used because it doesn't have a pattern embossed on it and leaves a smooth surface. If you want the smooth surface and don't have Viva you can use parchment or printer paper they just don't bend around the cake as easily...

You can use printer paper as well (as long as they are straight from the package and clean), I don't really use viva, I tend to use printer paper. HTH

I have fabulous luck using the PRINTED side of Viva towels, only--unprinted side or printer paper, not so much--most likely because my recipe is only lightly crusting. LOVE getting "seasonal" printed Viva on sale after the holidays!

I too was wondering this. I tried waxed paper but it didn't work, but my BC doesn't crust a whole lot. Thanks for posting this, sccandwbfan. These people know their stuff, don't they!

I have tried so many other papers.. cheap paper towels and bounty and brawny and all the rest they are all stiff.. Viva is the best. It has saved me so many times when someone sticks there fingers in the cake on delivery or when putting the cake together or away.. and it is just alittle rub and the spot is gone.. no tools.
I buy them by the 15 roll pks. and because it is so soft and adsorbant they last for ever. I cut them in half and it is perfect for wrapping around the side or top of cake.. so smooth you would think its fondant. In fact some people have.. Its worth the money.

I personally like the pattern over the smooth surface. I always get people asking me how I did that. I think it adds that special little touch.

The price they charge for Viva verses the other brands is rather high $1.98 a roll not the double pkg. @ Walmart, the first roll I bought I told my Hubby these are for me to pratice with only and I darn near had a cow when I saw him wiping his wet hands on them he replaced the roll out.... Thats what the Bounty are for gerr.. He now knows no Viva!

I don'tknow where you live but we have stores called biglots and some of the other stores that buy out other stores. I have found 15 rolls of viva for 10.99

If you buy the multi roll pkg of viva it is cheaper than buying a single roll.

sometimes some of the drug stores also run sales on them.. i watch for those sales.

but there worth every penny. ( i contacted viva and told them how much I loved them and they sent me coupons! that helps..)

they also just came out with just your size viva.. where you can take a smaller piece off the roll.. not just a big sheet.

Her in australia we have viva paper but it is patterned. Wish we had the smooth one

I love Viva paper towels. My buttercream is so smooth that I was asked if it was fondant. Love it!! I wait for it to go on sale. I think I found the last one for .60 a roll. Love that price!!

Wow, I saw one of the Fabulous cake shows where they used the Viva method and charged a butt load for the cake. It was cool to see 'bakers' using the tips that I find online.
